Week 14 - ITF ($15K) - Nanjing, China - Hard

That's an impressive win ..... I do however think this is more about getting an A star in Chinese GSCE ...... and playing a bit of adult tennis on the side.

I see Monica Robinson went out in a 3 setter taking over 3hrs, Emma is undoubtedly a strong junior getting points here could be a real challenge there is 1 QvQ slot, otherwise it's up against the No1 (294) No5 (533) Ma 18 and already 653, Feng (706), no 8 (574) or Lu 753. Pretty tough for a point in a 10k

I can't say I ever look at the odds. She has played almost 80 futures and only progressed out of qualifying less than a handful of times. She also list to Alicia Barnett in September.

Great news for Emma. I like looking at the odds - I agree it's not much to do with tennis - as in this case - just interesting - Emma should never have been such an overwhelming favourite, however much one thought she might win.

And Monica's mega favourite odds confirmed as daft, despite it being very close. Net, net, all very good  smile

I note Emma is not having anything to do with doubles....

The Q slots in the MD go from the top seed down to a Q v Q slot. Will be interesting to see.....

Joanna is obviously making a fair crack of things independent of the LTA however she is so far ahead of anyone we have in the 2001 age group there must be a very strong case for the LTA supporting her transition if her parents were so Inclined. I would seriously consider offering a Wimbledon Q WC to get the ball rolling. It would also mean a stream of girls 2003 through to 1998 with realistic potential of becoming top 100 players ie filling in the blank Taylor, Swan, Jones, ..... Radacanu, Fischer.

Given Joanna's dad's tennis background and her being in the UK for a long time, I'm sure the conversation has been had already with the LTA.

Well Joanna made into the second round with a 6-0 6-3 win. Deserves a mention, even if she is listed under as Chinese Taipei

I was quite surprised how they doesn't appear to be any UK press release on her. I know she hasn't done too much of note on the pro scene, but an obvious talent and successful junior, you'd think there'd be something about when she left the UK, experience of living in Taiwan, future plans etc.

As has been mentioned before, the continued rise and importance of Asia in the WTA calendar might go against any plans the LTA have of a potential switch of representation.

Great to see Emma qualify here.

Will be tough to get that 1st point but a good challenge.

I just watched a tennistube video of a British Tour final at Paddington posted in September 2016, a good watch and it showed Joanna beating Harriet Dart! There are only 10 minutes of edited highlights but even 18 months ago she looks a good athlete with a heavy serve for junior tennis and was giving the ball a good thump of both backhand and forehand.

On serve so far in set 2 though Emma has saved 5 BPs in total in her first 2 service games, the first one a 16 point affair.

6-4 2-2*
