GB Player of the Month

Now Konta is out (sigh), who is everyone's player of the month for March? I think it's been a bit weird this season - the top 100 players (bar Kyle) aren't getting the results, but when you look outside the top 100 there's so much to be positive about!

I've done a fun little vote https://thebigracket.org/2018/03/27/who-is-your-march-gb-player-of-the-month/

Let's start a debate!!

Did I forget anyone?

That appeared to end that one then

Though to be fair, I absolutely agree, Gabi.

Jodie continues her good run in Sharm even if this week's final, if she gets there again, will be on 1st April.

And Jay is certainly having a good week in his Mexico Challenger and that could yet turn into a great week. Again the singles final there is 1st April ( he is still in the doubles too ).

Even with these ( and I guess Jay can count any title as a marker down for April  ) still Gabi for me though.

In reply to Jon's post a few days ago, we have a thread for it, Jon

It's just not an 'official' prize, that someone runs - more like an ad hoc drop-in nomination thread - that actually didn't quite take off.

Which, I agree, with you, is a shame.

So, yes, short of Danielle Daley slicing her way through the Glasgow draw (), I think Henry Patten must be up there, in pole position, for February's Player of the Month.

(He'll probably fall on his nose now......)

But it's early days in February still......

The idea didn't take off as neither did the nomination from 2 years ago Gabi Taylor. Just a complete crash down the rankings.

 Cool thanks CD. .

So here's an idea, in last week of feb , and future months, I'll put up a thread asking for nominations for player of month and for people to make nomination from men, women, juniors, singles and doubles as they see fit. People should give reason for the nomination  eg won x event, or beat top 10 player , or won consistently over month etc etc .

A couple of days after month end , based on nominations list I'll create a poll and folks can then have a few days to vote for player of month. I'm happy to do that when I'm around, when I'm away I'll advise and someone else can take it on that month. Maybe end november , in December, we can do a player of year award?

Would that work as a process? Saves me or someone reviewing and making a list and nominations can be anyone folks feel is worthy , but as polls are limited to 20 fields I'll need to limit it to that number. The poll will let everyone vote on who is most worthy.

I guess as its mid feb, it's too late to do January now.

The month should be based on play between 1st and 31st of that month, or can be based on events finishing in a given month, I'm relaxed to go with what people think.

Would this work? I'll do February nominations thread post w.c 24th feb and close them 29th feb, and put up a poll March 1st.

Would general discussion  be best place to put the thread?

If you're happy to do that, Jon, sounds grand !

(If it's too much hassle, I'm also happy with a disorganised, anything-goes approach, with people just chipping in...... )

So quite happy to do this!

Main question I have so we are all on same page. What constitutes a month?

Eg February, do the events starting on feb 24th and finishing on march 2nd or thereabouts count as February? Or March? Or do the wins in feb, up to qf stage say, count as feb?

My inclination is an event with the final in march counts as march but I'm relaxed , main thing is I know folks on this forum get very picky and so want to have a clear ground rule going in?

Good stuff.

I do think we should allocate whole events to particular months, so that we are then considering all players' full week performances rather than say R1 and R2 just being considered and any further being the next month.

I'd go with events' MDs starting on Monday of month X count. to X. That then ties in with entry weeks, ie performances in entry weeks 5, 6, 7 and 8 count for February.

I think part of the problem, and why it previously hot no traction, is that most months, no player has really achieved particularly much.
Someone will have temporarily incrementally improved their own standard, and got a few good results or performances. But we invariably end up comparing very slight gains amongst very similar achievements. eg made a SF, got a rankings high etc. That leads to no real standout choice(s) in many months, and so people can't decide between things that are essentially just a toss of a coin. or personal affinity and preference.
I suppose you are player of the month if you are the only Brit to play in a given month, but how far down the scale towards that absolute reduction do we go comparatively before the awarding of a title loses all meaning?

Also, there is the factor whereby, until recently, mostly Andy or Johanna would objectively win most months.

I'd be more in favour of only running the prize in periods when there were candidates for that given span that had clear excellent achievements or milestones that outperformed their baseline. If more than one such candidate occurs in any given month then put it to a vote, but the occasions on which we have multiple outstanding achievements from which to select are vanishingly rare.

So maybe we only award the title 5 times a year to recognise the great month individual plauers have had, rather than, as it sometimes seems, the least worst month amongst our players.

Thanks indy , makes sense. If anyone has different views shout, I'll wait to back end of feb week 8 to start asking for nominations then

I like the dates.

I also like the idea of each month (sure, there might be dud months, but that's part of the vicissitudes of life - proud of that word at 11.30 at night )

But I think people should be encouraged to contribute during the month, not just wait till the end. i.e. Jon, you can get all the nominations together at the end of the month but people can stick them up as we go along - it's really easy to forget otherwise.

So Kyle !!!! There's one And Henry Patten.....

Isn't that a bit complicated? Can't we just have one thread???? This one? That has ongoing interest, not just once a month because it highlights the achievements people think are noteworthy as we go along? And then has a vote at the end (for those who want to)?
