Lost the first set 2-6 and Jakupovic has been full value for that scoreline, loads of really poor errors from Gabi and it's not just down to the conditions.
Just the 2nd time she's lost the first set of a match since that final in India last December.
Went to bed at end of first set and just saw it's 0-5* with Jakupovic serving for the set with 2 love games and another to 15.
Disappointing after the run she's been on, but has just come up against an in-form player on her favourite service, much better on the day. The worry is this will be the type of player she will face going forward now she's in the top 200.
Jakupovic holds to 15 and wins 6-2 6-2 in little over an hour. Hopefully a good final Aussie tournament next week (in a weaker field) to end an unbelievable tour and it will be very interesting to see what Gabi and her team decide to do next.
A salutary lesson for Gabi. She still hasn't played many in the top 200+, so she now has a better idea of the level she has to rise to in order to challenge consistently at this level. One more week to go now for both Gabi and Katy D before they finish their Australian run.
Agreed and a healthy indicator that she Has the potential to continue rising through the 60-100k level very exciting times for Gabby. Blob where and when in the world are the 25ks toughest? It would be interesting to know the average rank of the last 32 in each tournament to prize money ratio of the tournaments.
SF points at a $60K are still a very healthy return.
Yes indeed, but the highest ranked player she beat to get those 29 points was 228.
Yes, I showed how weak the event draw was in the charts thread. Also, just tried to show how hard the task from here gets in terms of Gabi's continued progression (or any player at this ranking).
My point here was: if you're going to have a 'failure' week, or a loss, very well done to make that 'only' a SF at a $60K
