Rather helped by Gabi and the old stepping into the second serve not working.
First two she kind of rushed herself into errors on return, third one a little amusingly Myers put it out wide and aced her on second serve as she stepped forward and finally got a decent return receiving a first serve normally.
I only saw that last game so I assume rather more successful before but I have said before that it's certainly not a default second serve tactic I'm convinced about while the rest is generally going swimmingly.
I was just thinking how solid Gabi was looking when she netted a short ball put away that would have given her 6-2* in the TB. Thereafter saved 2 SPs in the TB and took her own second with her serve just about holding up although I was getting more confident on return generally.
Her general groundstrokes were again looking very good, moving well to the ball and then very consistent, though I didn't see too much on this occasion.
Probably more to do with the fact she has really stepped up in terms of performance but not in terms of level of competition. Geography the annual timetable of tournaments and finance are probably also major factors I agree an interesting statistical quirk and now something I will probably remember for the rest of my life, and thank you, but not something one would want as their ultimate achievement.
Great win by Gabi to wake up too. I went to sleep when she was 5-6 *0-40 down thinking that's the second set gone, and she hasn't lost a second set for a long time, so I hope she wins the third. I certainly didn't think she'd find a way back from that hole at that point.
Gabi's game earlier is certainly looking very consistent at the moment, except for that second serve return Indy mentions. She missed some gimmes on that earlier too. Myers was also playing relatively well, but more errors than Gabi, which was a key difference. Next up Gabi will finally play someone within the top 200. So far the standard hasn't been that much above the 25k level, so this will be more of a test. In the bottom half of the draw, Miyu Kato, 2nd seed, has been absolutely flying. She won her QF match in 47 mins yesterday (though lost in the doubles final afterwards). For the first time in a while though, Gabi will now have to beat someone with a higher rank than her to reach the final. The type of challenge she now needs...
Gaby is creeping up on Naomi in the rankings at this rate there might be a crossover in the 150s as cant see Naomi winning much in clay season. Still a bit to be done but certainly possible for her to end 2018 as GB 3.

Given Gabi as of now leads Naomi by 244 points to 130 in the race I reckon it is very possible.
Now not expecting all to continue like that, and so much still to transpire, but it is quite a lead in the race to November.
