Well done Gabriella - next opponent not certain as Hibino is 4-6 5-1 . According to the latest OER live scores - Gabbi has to win another round to move up in the rankings
Abbie Myers is an all out attacking player. She can hit some scorching winners but also some shockers. Shes playing her second tournament since getting injured last July.
Congrats to Gabi on her second round win. Interesting opponent next up, as Abbie Myers took out Nao Hibino, the top seed and WR120. The windy conditions obviously make playing more challenging, but Gabi just needs to keep on trucking on. So far Gabi is now back up to her starting position of 178 in the live rankings, but is still -3 points for the Miami fortnight, as she has 18 points coming off for reaching the Mornington 25k SF last year. She wins 15 points for reaching the QF here, and will go into positive territory if she wins her next match, as that will take her to 29 points.
At the moment Gabi does need to keep accruing points relatively steadily to keep her ranking forward momentum. She has another 9 points coming off week after Miami (QF Mornington 2 last year), and then later in May, so still another month +, she has her first 25k win from last year coming off, so will lose 50 points then. So one more win here, and Gabi will cover the 9 pointer too... and thereafter she will start replacing May's 50. Once those 50 are effectively covered, then Gabi ensures she will stay well within the top 200 and indeed that her trajectory continues to move upwards throughout the clay season. This is one good reason for Gabi to stay on and play next week's 25k at the same venue, since she could indeed guarantee her top 200 position leading up to the French Open by the end of that tournament. Then she can have a break and a training block and plan her assault on the European clay season, with a lot of freedom in terms of her ranking position.
Just keeps rolling on
20 matches in 2018, 19-1
Last year, Gabi hit 20 matches at a similar pace, on 31st March; winning was slightly different though: her 19th win came 14th June.
Being $60K, these points go on right away; although with this being week 1 of Miami, that's less relevant.
Not surprised Hibino lost to Myers. Nao is pretty rubbish on clay >20% result differential to other surfaces. Not to say that it wasn't a good win for the Australian, but it might not signal that Myers is in amazing form as one might reasonably suspect given the result.

Data I post, opinions I offer, 'facts' I assert, are almost certainly all stupidly wrong.
Potentially very exciting times, I wonder what objectives she had set herself for the run through to the clay court season? A bit like Kyle, I dont think we should get fixated on ranking, it is not that important where as performance is, indeed merely maintaing a rank when stepping up from 25ks is in itself an achievement not that I see that happening here.

Yes, the only reason to discuss the rankings is in terms of Gabi being able to guarantee her French Open q entry that's all... I don't really see any issues, but further points this week and next will achieve that.
With Gabi's 50 pointer not coming off until 21/05 she's already well onto the French Open qualifying list which is out before then.
More generally some of us like talking rankings just in a kind of sports stato way without actually considering them any real be all and end all, particularly short term apart from occasional entry or seeding goals. Rankings are interesting. Just occasionally re a particular player I will say something like of course general development is the main thing just now but I don't really think any disclaimer is generally necessary and I think most folk here can see see them in context particularly for young players.
