Takes Jo back up to live 22 for now. Needs at least 2 more wins and the SF to possibly be ranked in the top 20 after Miami with that then taking her past Osaka and a certain Mertens.
I watched this match and it's great to see Jo playing with confidence and intent again. I thought she played really well and thoroughly enjoyed watching her, which I can't say has been the case of late. I didn't even see much wrong with her volleys Blob- apart from one obvious mi****. I just hope she can keep this going against Venus who looks in control against Kiki.
I quite enjoyed the technical talk on commentary saying how Jo's technique and ball striking had improved this week.
The faster courts are a bonus and her serve seems to be a weapon again.
She was AWESOME today. The serve was on, the forehand was solid, the backhand fantastic. It was all there. The first set she was aided by some timely and fairly frequent double faults from Mertens but after that she was untouchable. Really encouraging signs.
Over on the Stadium Court, Venus looks knackered and Bertens is cramping deep into the third.
Scheduling could play a role here. All the womens R16 matches are tomorrow.
Jo still has a doubles match to play tonight.
Will Venus recover if they get an early scheduling tomorrow? If the doubles match is long will that affect Jo?
I think with it being Venus, they'll probably favour an evening slot, with Jo as defending champ offering good collateral to that deal too.
