Week 12 - WTA Premier Mandatory $8.6M - Miami, USA Hard

Holds to love 5-3*
Looking more and more confident, and going for her shots

3 set points. Flipkens saves the first, Jo misses the sideline with the second, but takes the third
6-3 smile

Flipkens proving hard to put away with her serve, loads of slices and good volley skills
But Jo gets the break, and it's *3-2

Flipkens gets her first break point of the match, but Jo saves it. Some good rallies, and terrific defence from Flipkens
4-2*

Crunch time 5-3*
15-40 = two match points
Only needs one as Flipkens goes long

Good start to the title defence
First serve 69% and 76% won, 65% 0n second serve.8 aces and only 1 DF

Im sorry but to me that looked like Jo pretty much back to her best. That serve was ON.

Good stuff

By matching Gavrilova and Pavlyuchenkova's L64 wins Jo is for now live ranked 23.

Just another 5 wins and she'll be about back where she started !

Jo was good. Her serve was on fire - best it's looked since mid last year. Calmer and focused on court.

I still think there's a little hesitancy when she moves forward to put a ball away but that will come with a couple more match wins.

L32: (11) Johanna Konta WR 14 (CH 4 last July) vs (22) Elise Mertens (BEL) WR 21 (CH 20 in January)

Mertens beat Pera 7-6(5) 6-3. She lies 8th in the race after her storming start to the year in Australia. The Hobart International title ( beating Hev in 3 sets in the SF ) and Australian Open SF contributed 1060 of these 1131 points. Has since lost early in Doha, Dubai and Indian Wells to Cirstea, Bellis and Wang Qiang respectively.

They have apparently never met.
