Looking at the men's results today, guys comfortable on faster courts seem to have had upper hand over slower court specialist. What is the surface playing like, does it look quick or are those results just coincidences?
If Katie could have cut out some of those errors - quite a few of them were shots just wide - she could have won that easily. Tricky opponent who mixed it up a bit, but I thought it was a match that could have easily been won
Good competitive performance and while annoying to lose ( and she will be annoyed ) certainly seems the game is there for this level and can be improved. Margins ...
Re the earlier discussion about her French Open qualifying position, the further 10 points for winning her FQR have her at a guaranteed 277 points for the qualifying list. That would currently have her just inside the top 200 which would be fine ( it would need a virtually full attendance to deny anyone in the top 200 ). But keep on winning for the bigger picture.
Does spoil one statistic. Now 4-1 this year against top 140 players, though I am sure she will hope for many more matches against players high in that category.

Dodin won. Someone retiring in qualies should be out, full stop. Sane event, once youre out, that's it. Doesnt sit easily with me, now she's won a round in main draw.
Serena losing set and 4-2 down v Osaka. Can't say I mind her not being seeded, those are the breaks and don't think the protected rule should be changed. She will get back up eventually if she's good enough.
Serena still getting her match game back. It's hard. Sharapova is testimony to that, realising different reasons. Must also realise Andy will take time to get back as per nishikori and others
Sharapova is very injury prone. She was pre-ban and has been out for chunks of time post ban. When she isn't injured her play is pretty poor - she is beatable and her opponents know it.

Dodin will now lose her LL points, but since that comes because her MD points are greater and plus the money with that I doubt that she's bothered about that. -
The LL forfeiting these points if they win a MD match is one decent rule the WTA have ( they have occasional ones ) but I do agree that if they retire in their FQR match they should be out. I think that's a simple, sensible and uncontroversial change to make.
By the way, how does the LL system operate here ? I know that in many tournaments ( mainly men's ? ) there is a ballot among a few players so noone knows in advance that they are getting a LL place.
Re Serena - I think I'm right in saying that Osaka wasn't seeded, so Serena could still have been drawn against her (or met her in R2 if seeds have a bye) even if she had been seeded.

Yes, all the R1 players are non seeds. Osaka is WR 22 after her Indian Wells title, but unlike the ATP the WTA do not use the post Indian Wells rankings for Miami seedings. They put their draws out a bit earlier and based on the 05/03 rankings. So if just one had been seeded yes it could have been a R2 meeting.
re Dodin the trouble is that knowing she was already through she could have played out her match and just gone through the motions and to anyone not watching they'd be none the wiser so it's hard to enforce a rule and tbh who would bust a gut to try and win a match when they already know they're through anyway?

As Indi says, on the mens side, or in the slams at least, they have a ballot between the number of lucky losers plus one I think it is to ensure that the highest ranked of the lucky losers are not guaranteed the spot. So that way they are forced to give of their best in the FQR...
There are some complicated rules in the WTA rulebook. In some cases there is a ballot as in the mens of N+1. In certain cases it is just the highest ranked LL. And there is that stupid specific rule that allows someone to retire and keep their LL status.
And so Dodin makes it into the second round ..........
