Week 11- Challenger ($150,000+H) - Irving Tennis Classic, TX, USA (hard) - doubles

L16:  (3) Dominic Inglot & Neal Skupski CR 106 (50+56) vs Wesley Koolhof & Artem Sitak (NED/NZL) CR 113 (61+52)

The top seeds, as intimated on the Drummondville thread, are Kontinen & Peers!

Slight contrast between the singles main and qualifying draws !!!

Last direct singles entry is 108 for a challenger, big challenger though it may be.

Seems Cam and other decently ranked players had no interest in qualifying, leaving that futures level qualifying draw and an ATP 250 like main draw.

Crazy stuff ...

The main draw also has 10 Alts and 1 LL in a field of 32, together with 4 WCs and the 4 Qs, that must be some kind of record too.

I'm very confused, why isn't Norrie in the Irving draw? There are many alternates who are ranked worse than him....

The alternates are the smart ones who didn't withdraw from the qualifiers list, knowing they might well get into the main draw....

Disappointing if that truly is the case. Especially since Irving is in the Dallas/Fort Worth area where he played college tennis.

Yes, then I really am quite surprised since he could do with both the points and the match practice at the moment.

Yep... he really needs to find top 100 points before French Open. Nothing to defend so just a bunch of matches should do it

And in this v weird tournie, two qualies drew each other in round one; one ranked 1074, the ranked mid 700's. Golden ticket for one of those two guys!

Which makes the Norrie non entry even more hard to fathom.

Edit - Rinderknech, ranked at 1074 and a qualifier wins this first round match and gets through to last 16. His ranking will rise something like 200 plus places now and somewhere close to Dan Evans who is 799 in live rankings!

I would actually really love to know if this is a record or if not, which tournament does....anyone?

Every year, this sends me crazy, THERE IS NO NEED TO HAVE 2 WEEK LONG MASTERS.  The reason they make it 2 weeks, is so that they can fit in the womens' tourn to run parallel.  As a result, all players drop out in first week,  then you get this challenger, that is far stronger than all Asian ATP 500/250.

I'd say this, along with the fact that Egypt has 50 futures a year, must be one of the worst decision made on the tennis circuit.

One way to solve this would be to have the Men at one tournament, and the Women at the other, then to swap around after a week long break for challengers etc.

I think if they made the mens one week and the ladies the next the attendance (and prize money?) would vary too much.
