Well she got over the line!! Slow start and then she seemed to be in control and therefore well done before making it to the finish line. Hope fully a good week ahead!
Interestingly all bar one of Laura's counters are between 5 and 21 points, the exception being the 80 points she gained for her Karume 60k win last May. This shows Laura often gets starts in tournaments but rarely goes beyond the QF. In fact, apart from Karume, amongst her 16 counters the only other time Laura has gone beyond the QF is her Perth 25k SF from last month.
So, this means that first, Laura has to reach the QF here (and elsewhere) to add to her current points tally, but second and more importantly, a real sign of progress for Laura will be if she can start to win more than 1 or 2 matches in any given tournament!
Just to note that Laura also needs points full stop to maintain her ranking over the next two months. By the time the Karume 80 points drop off on 21 May, she will have had another 4 counters (2 in April, 2 in May), worth a total of 53 points also dropping off. So within the next two months Laura needs 133 points just to replace those coming off. That's just over half her existing total of 259 points. Let's hope her upturn in form continues!
Indeed. Replace these and this time have a good second half of the year.
Certainly some good signs at the moment and her returning coach may well be a real factor. Just for now want to see it sustained and yes some good runs.
A good consistent whole year with a few bigger score runs, the way to a significantly improved ranking.
R16: ROBSON, Laura (GBR) 6 219 vs Katherine SEBOV (CAN) [SE] 338 (CH:242 Aug 17) 19yrs (JCH:22 July 15)
R16: DART, Harriet (GBR) [SE] 263 vs Giulia GATTO-MONTICONE (ITA) 269 (CH:214 April 14)
Sebov's SE is because she reached the SF in Yokohama last week as a qualifier, where she lost to Kudermetova, who beat the other qualifier and SE who made the final...
Don't know much about the Italian opponent, but Dart is 1/3 to win. If the 2 favourites in that section come through then it will be significantly tougher in the quarter finals against Andreescu, who I was surprised came here. Thought it would have made more sense for her to be in nearby Shenzhen.
No idea what the problem is but Laura seems to have given walkovers in both singles and doubles so that is the end of the tournament for her. Hope for a speedy recovery but coupled with withdrawals from tournies in a couple of weeks time, is there some sort of ongoing issue? Best of luck for Harriet later to keep GB flag flying.
