Indian Wells strikes me as very different to most hard court venues, the courts are slow for hard courts, its almost like a change in surface from the AO, bit of an anomaly to me, lots of money available but not a slam and not really a slam surface (ie US or AO)
It's an inconsistent relatively poor group behind Federer and Nadal at the top of the rankings just now, not really challenging players past their best. We had it very good for a sustained period, a great period.
Even if and when such as Murray, Djokovic and Wawrinka get back to a decent standard again what we really need a bit longer term is some of these new kids on the block to step up consistently to give us new rivalries and a narrative to take the game forward through the next decade.
For now the mid to late 20s group on the whole are a relative wash out, though maybe one or two individuals can yet find the consistency that has been missing to date. And some of the early 20s and teens excite at times but haven't yet sustained it.

As an aside to this, only 3 of the mens last 16 from Melbourne are in the field still here (21 players standing as we speak). 3. Federer, Chung and Carreno Busta. It certainly backs up Indy's general feelings above. No one is showing any consistency at all at the top of the field right now. thiem, Dimitrov, Zverev all went early, Cilic has just gone out as well. Del Potro maybe can push himself up the rankings with some decent form? He has it in him to rise to top 5 if he can keep going through next couple of weeks. Murray will no doubt feel quite heartened when he returns,
Worth noting that Cuevas, Lopez and Querrey are still in the last 16 singles and doubles quarters and could land the million dollar bonus. Fed will no doubt stop that but it has obviously encouraged some of the men
Also noting borna coric this week. He's beaten young, Ramos Vinolas and Bautista Agut all in 2 sets and for loss of just 9 games over 6 sets. Pretty brutal.
"Challenger trash" enters the lexicon of tennis terminology. I think in the Vandy Dictionary it essentially means a challenger level player ( that in itself with some maybe a rather flexible term ).
