Osaka beats Radwanska 3 & 2. I hoped her work was done after getting rid of the unwelcome noise in R1.

What do you have against Osaka?

Just prefer that Japan's top ranked player didn't build confidence ahead of the Fed Cup play-off.

Although I see that she's been missing from recent Fed Cup matches so don't know if issues??

I am finding it very hard getting my 'grrr Naomi Osaka' game face on in preparation for Fed Cup. She's just so likable and endearing, and plays a cracking game too!

Erm... I mean: grrrr grrrr grrrr

I like Naomi too, more power to her as far as I'm concerned, I'd like to see her climb the rankings.. As for the issues barely surprising really, since she's more American than Japanese. Apparently it was her father that 'decided' Naomi should play for Japan... another over controlling Dad it would seem. Wasn't his decision. The article below explains well how in general Naomi is received/ perceived in Japan, none of it is surprising, and it's obviously a problem there that she doesn't speak Japanese, never mind her bi-racial mix. But the more she becomes a start, the more accepted she will be...

Interesting article, there is a certain irony given the US is hardly squeaky clean on its capacity to value diversity indeed we can hardly put ourselves on a pedestal. Regardless Naomi or her parents have made some interesting choices hopefully she will not switch nationalities improve her Japanese and become a role model as the face of Japanese Womens Tennis. Good luck to her.

9 of the 16 seeds playing yesterday managed to lose. (11) Jo was the second highest seeded casualty after (3) Muguruza who lost to American qualifier, Sachia Vickery.

Re Naomi Osaka, OK, let her continue to play well and climb the rankings. And not play Fed Cup.

Julia Goerges clocks up a win for the seeds who still trail the non seeds 10-12 in the L64 matches.

The parochial significance of that win is it will drop Jo to WR 13 at best. Anyone else will need at least to reach the final to overtake her. The big overtakes may be in Miami!  If she doesn't then take a big fall she will have had a very good week.

Good comeback run by the seeds with seeds ahead in winning L64 matches 17-13 with 2 left to go.

The only further non seed win was a noble effort against (29) Bertens by some Serena Williams.

We now have a Venus vs Serena L32 match which I am sure neither desired.

Remember anout a thousand years ago, when Naomi lost in the IW CHallenger to a young upstart, and we said no matter how good that young upstart, Naomi shouldn't be losing to a 16 year old like that?

Well, today, that very same Amanda Anisimova, using her WC she earned from performance in the Challenger, just knocked out Kvitova, and ended her 14 match unbeaten streak, 6-2 6-4!
Well done to that young lady, and a bit of an apology perhaps to Ms. Broady.

And on live rankings, the same young lady has jumped past Naomi to WR 129 (Naomi at 132)

I noticed a couple of days ago young Russian WC Sofya Zhuk missing out on a load of MPs against Magdalena Rybarikova when serving at *5-4 in the final set in a lengthy Ad Zhuk, Deuce, Ad Zhuk, Deuce etc phase. But I hadn't been following the scores before I first saw deuce so didn't know quite how many she missed. I see an article confirming that it was 11 missed MPs in that one game! ( and of course saved by Rybarikova ).

It is to her credit that having been broken back she broke again and serving for the match a second time proved rather more straightforward for a 7-5 final set win.

Zhuk is currently a set down to fellow WC Danielle Collins ( beat Madison Keys in the L64 ) in their L32 match.

Collins, who Katie Boulter beat 6-4 6-0 in QR1 at the US Open, beat Zhuk 6-4 6-4

Ominous for Fed Cup, as Naomi Osaka thrashes fifth seed, Karolina Pliskova, 6-2 6-3, to make the semi-finals of her first Premier Mandatory.

A couple of interesting SFs, pitting the going to be even more clear WR 1 Halep and remarkable Venus against 2 players heading for big new CHs, Kasatkina beginning to really show what could increasingly be the future ( she thumped the much better of late Kerber 6-0 6-2 in the QF ) and Osaka in an ominously good present ( Kasatkina is up to live 14, a SF win and she jumps 3 further players including current live 13 Jo, and Osaka is up to live 31 ).

(1) Halep vs Osaka
(8) V Williams vs (20) Kasatkina
