Indian Wells are giving a $1M bonus to anyone winning both singles and doubles title this year, and some sort of much lower premium to combined rounds progression across the events (e.g. reaching QF in both gets a 'something extra' etc.)
So, you've got a lot of singles players that don't normally go much near doubles, like Halep, Vika etc using their singles rankings or a WC to enter; thus shunting out doubles players for the bigger names.
Which I imagine, is exactly the effect Ellison had in mind when he implemented the system.

Yes, a lot of singles players that you wouldn't normally see.
Also, I noticed a few potential and actual Fed cup pairings in the draw - Azerenka/Sabalenka, and Halep/Begu for example

I approve of this, if doubles is to be taken seriously and be of interest to the public it should have the best tennis players competing. Imagine Roger and Rafa v Andy and Novak. Id watch that as would the public. No MTBs or abandoning of Adv etc though.
Me too! It will be fascinating to see how the singles players do. McEnroe dominated doubles in his era with Fleming. I would love to see Andy and Jamie pair up but cant see Andy staying fit enough for long enough.,
Anna does seem to go long stretches of poor form, and then blitzes of results all together. The tide is very much out at the moment.
Aoyama pretty likely to be in the Japanese Fed Cup team.

Johanna's opponent is decided:
R64: Johanna KONTA (GBR) [11] 11 v. Marketa VONDROUSOVA (CZE) 54 (CH 52, Feb. 2018)
This time last year, Marketa was WR269, and playing (and beating) Katie Boulter in an Aussie $25K.
