Yes, in that second set Emily did break back, but then promptly lost her own serve again. 3rd set her returns have been much more dominant, though as Paul noted she failed to break in the first return game but did in the second at 15-40, and now has two more BPs in the third return game.... but fails again to take either. But wins Ad again and finally converts one, now 2/8 in 3rd set BPs... 6-1 4-6 *4-2

Perhaps I should stop looking at the scoreboard, doing better when I am not looking.
Now a break up at *4-2

Em just struggling to win that 4th point in games this set. Gets to 40-0 on her own serve, then loses two points before holding. Now just a game away 5-2*

Ugh. Emily saves two BPs, then finally has a MP, doesn't take it. Then serves a DF to provide another BP, loses it. Now back on serve 3rd set 5-4*

Consecutive singles wins for the first time since Shrewsbury in the 1st week of November - 8 events ago.
Both those wins were in qualifying though.

It's her first consecutive Main Draw wins in singles since Sharm in the 1st week of April last year! 27 events ago!
Most of last year spent trying to qualify for >=$25K events around the world tells that story. The lack of any breakthrough in that adventure also tells a story.

Excellent to break that streak.

Three MPs next return game however, and wins the first this time Plays Cengiz, another junior, next.

L16: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 578 beats KUBANOVA, Karolina (CZE) 1149=CH 16 yrs (JCH:1265 Jan 18) 6-1 4-6 6-4

QF: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 578 vs CENGIZ, Berfu (TUR) [7] 502 (CH:455 June 17) 18 yrs (JCH:39 Jan 16)

Cengiz walloped her WR 851 opponent today for the loss of just 2 games in less than an hour, suggesting tomorrow's match will be a lot tougher.

It's quite a commitment that Em has been making to her singles in Sharm with no chance of adding to her doubles counting total after her first title and indeed not even bothering with doubles this week.

Got to wish her the best.

Emily is about to suffer a massive fall in the singles rankings as her 12 points for winning at Sharm last year come off. This will take her down from 578 to 656 next week. Her biggest point counter is now only 6 points, and she only has 6 counters of 2 pts or more; this week's 2 points will be her 7th. She could really do with 1 or 2 more wins here this week, but I see her next match as being a very tough one.

Respect to her for doing so after all these years but then I again she is privileged in a lot of respects to be able to financially afford to do that. Im are there have been many better British players from council estates who wouldnt have been able to go down this path. I often wonder how many top players weve lost.

Rankings wise she should be ok for the Indian swing and maybe pick up points there the 25k will be far weaker than the ones the likes of Harriet and Katie have had to play. Assume she link up with her pal Ankita for doubles.

The Cengiz match will be her QF, don't know if that affects the discussion of how many points she earns if she wins the match tomorrow presumably.
