Week 9 - ITF ($15K) - Heraklion, Greece Clay

Well thankfully Em has come back to win in the third set.

R2: APPLETON, Emily (GBR) 5 629 beat KARVOUNI, Vasiliki (GRE) Q UNR 17yo JCH=154 6-3 1-6 6-3

Potentially the 2nd seed up next, though she is currently locked in a one set all battle with an UNR 16 yr old Greek WC.

She will be GB's top ranked Emily on Monday ( 36 points to EWS's 34 ) and is so far matching EWS this week.

In the first and third sets, the Greek got >65% of 1st serves in, but won less than half; in the second, she got fewer in, but won 85%
Roughly 6 points per service game in every set.
Emily perhaps a bit lucky that her opponent didn't seem to realise what it was that was working for her.

Eventually the 2nd seed, who apropos of nothing is a redhead, has scraped through 6-4 in the third in 2hrs 18. There is hope for Emily.

QF: APPLETON, Emily (GBR) [5] 629 vs SCHAEDER, Laura (GER) [2] 457 (CH:277 March 17)

Team Emily's combined exploits this morning have meant we stand on the week at 17 wins from 17 entries.
That makes this week 7/9 this year where we have had a ratio of >=1.000 of entries to wins.
The only two exceptions were the two weeks that contained a GB event.

Therefore I very scientifically hereby call for a ban on all GB events henceforth

Well done Emily eventually :)
Here's hoping she can benefit from not over-exerting herself in dubs this week to come up with another singles win next...

Bookies have them both at 5/6 to win, suggesting a close match.

Seems generous to Emily but, given they both made heavy weather of their matches today, might be fair.

Or to make sure that only 1 or 2 Brits can enter any event that happens to be located in the UK - so let's just have 2-3 WTA events during the grass court season and be done with the rest. That way we can maintain this all important record of having more wins than entries. wink

The ITF and LTA are doing their best to reduce the GB events, already got rid of the 15k's  cry

Yes that was a very effective move - it got rid of at least 50% of the GB women who could enter tournaments at one fell swoop.

With any luck some of the lower ranked will fairly soon be unranked and so more struggle to get into any tournaments at all

Oh almost definitely. And then the promising juniors can be persuaded not even to bother trying because they will never get onto the ladder. The new ITF reforms should then make it clear that they will never be able to call themselves professionals, so why try at all..
