Week 9 - ATP 500 - Abierto Mexicano TELCEL - Acapulco, Mexico (hard)

Cam took the first set 6-3 and is leading 3-2 on serve. Looking solid on server at the mo.

Despite dubai having significantly higher prizemoney, acapulco has 7 top ten players versus 1 in dubai and 12 top 20 total versus 2. Doubles entry much stronger
Outside of the seeds it's pretty equal but quite startling difference

Suppose it will be easier and more convenient for those to venture up to Indian Wells.

Dubai still normally manages much better fields. Last year's top 3 seeds were Murray, Wawrinka and Federer. This year they are Dimitrov, Pouille and Bautista Agut. Not the field they would have expected for the dosh they are putting up.

perhaps acapulco has ploughed a lot into appearance fees this season?

Nonetheless, well done to Cam on joining them in the main draw, good win over Kudla

Its very popular on the ladies side Nicole Gibbs on her vlog last year described it as one of her favourite venues because of the way they look after the players and the player friendly set up.

Tough one. Then winner plays nishikori or Shapovalov, then maybe del Potro. Not easy!

Err, yes not the easiest.

Cam's qualifying 20 points evidently have him for now with a live ranking of 109 which would be a CH by one place. Plenty players though close behind and ready to relegate him with a win or two.

He has nothing to defend until June so hopefully can steadily ( though spectacularly is fine ) push his ranking up into the top 100.

The draw opens up if he wins the first round! (Nishikori or Shapovalov!!)

Probably the worst spot possible for Cam, but Thiem is beatable. Fellow US challenger circuit player Sandgren beat him at the Aussie Open and it will be Cam's best (or most prevalent) surface vs Dom's worst. Had this been on clay then it would probably have been a write off (despite his DC heroics) but while still an outsider, he will have half a chance here. As others say though, it certainly doesn't get any easier should he pull it off.
