Week 8 - ITF ($25K) - Perth, Australia - Hard

Gabi the better player throughout save a couple of games when the wind really picked up.
Smart play, excellent professionalism, and tactics. Ground strokes are solid on both wings, moves well, never lazy in her work, always thinking.
What's not to like?

I hope the emoticons are applauding Gabriella and not the umpire wink

Congrats indeed to Gabi for her 3rd 25k trophy in just a few short months

And even more congrats to her for the fact that in 8 days time she will enter the world's top 200, somewhere in the early 190s

This was a good performance today, from the little I could watch, soured a bit by Georges tantrums and her lack of graciousness at the end, though I was also surprised by the final call. Gabi had quite a high UE count at times, and missed some good drive volley opportunities. The UEs were usually when she was going for too much on shots BUT if she is to continue to progress up the rankings, I would sooner that she continue to go for these types of shots and learn to keep them in more regularly (although being judicious is also important). Gabi has a good aggressive game, and she certainly doesn't want to temper it. She is generally consistent too, and brings a good energy and demeanour to the court that should continue to stand her well. She has a great attitude. Long may she keep it, even when the going gets tougher, since it will stand her well. For now she can enjoy her latest win and new career breakthrough. Fantastic Gabi, we all look forward to seeing what comes next! smilesmile

4 titles at >=$25K level really does put Gabi in exalted territory amongst Brits - and all achieved in the space of 12 months.

That win should take her to somewhere around 212 in the rankings.

It will be interesting to see if Gabi and Katy stay on for the Mildura 25k in two weeks time (and then there is a Canberra 60k two weeks after - that arguably should have been earlier). The field currently for the Mildura tournament is MUCH weaker. On the current acceptance list Gabi and Katy are listed 2 and 3, and by the time of the tournament Gabi would likely be top seed based on her next week's ranking of 231.

No Peter. She is 231 next week, and as I've already said this win will take her top 200 to around 194 as it currently looks. It will take her points total to 290. She has 9 points that come off in mid-March for her Mildura QF result last year, and even if she doesn't replace those she would still likely just remain within the top 200.

Great work and Gabi didn't drop a set this week! An aggressive game is really only going to get better as her judgement and technique improve playing consistently at this level and will be essential to make her mark at the level above. I like her speed and mobility while not quite at Hev's level but close I think her attitude to competition and drive is at a completely different level, I would put her behind only Kyle and of course Andy is that respect. I dont sense the same granular fascination with every element of the game that they have but it is very early doors, but the attitude you can't buy.

Great start to 2018, Performimg like this will give her some great opportunities during the summer. Fingers crossed she stays fit and gets the chance to optimise them.

Congratulations to Gabi. biggrin I've been very impressed by her ability to adjust to both different conditions and different opponents. Yesterday the gusty wind meant she had to reign in her shots but today she could really go for them, aiming for the lines and mixing up the direction of her shots as well.

The line judging was not always great from what I could tell on the live feed, but Gabi coped better with things the way they were. I wasn't totally surprised by the mto for Georges as I thought there was a slight stiffness to her gait today (certainly between points).

Anyway, this was a brilliant start to the year for Gabi. It will be exciting to see where things go from here and also to see what it spurs her peers on to try and match her success.
