Week 7 - ITF ($25K) - Perth, Australia Hard

Nice to see Katy get the win after four straight first round losses, and with better serve percentages this week too !
And good wins for Gabi and Laura

What a nice block of results. Three wins. All in two sets. Against two top-300 players. One ex-top 150 player. One ex-top 30 junior. What's not to like....

Yay. Very good indeed.

Interesting that Gabi's second serve return stats were significantly good. The one match I have seen Gabi taking the second serve extremely early was in last week's final, which I have just got round to watching, and there she won of course but not because of her second serve return. There Muhammad actually had better second serve return stats than first and better second serve return stats than Gabi and to me on that day it was relatively ineffective. It very often had the look of rushing it to no very good effect, either deep or strong effect, and it often more a quick push, whilst having a better swing in first serves and often much more effective replies. Basically I understand what has been mentioned about rushing an opponent, here it looked more about rushing herself. But if she can work on it and combine quick reply with strong reply then I can see something. That does need a very good eye and reactions though.

Sorry to Gabi when she's doing so well to question one very interesting aspect of her play, and there was so much else that impressed. And looking at stats in other matches including today's, I have evidently seen it at its least effective. It certainly looks worth pursuing, maybe adjusting though and choosing the opponent and times rather than a default second serve return strategy. I must try and catch up on more of her matches.

Good to see all 3 win but a step up in round 2. Good luck to them all.

Laura is on the stream, and was good in the first set. There seemed to be more of a purpose to things, a plan, than is ever the case - she is trying to do the same things repeatedly, rather than each point being it's own little match, isolated from everything else.
Pays dividends, 6-3

Katy was 3-0 up, just served for the first set against the top seed, but was broken, 5-4*

Gabi is playing swings and roundabouts: was 5-2 p, lost 4 games in a row, but then broke to squeak into a TB, 6-6

Katy takes the first set from the #1 seed, 6-4

Very strong bookends to the set from Gabi, 7-6(2)

This was all very worth getting up for so far

Laura recovers a break; BH in good working order right now, 6-3 *3-4

Katy is flying! 6-4 5-0*

Gabi nicks an early break this set, as in the last, 7-6(2) *2-1

Katy completes her demolition of the top seed, in fabulous style. 6-4 6-1
That would rank amongst the top 3 of Katy's wins in 2017.

Some good serve placements help Laura win points easily, and get to the second set TB, 6-3 6-6

Gabi & Mayo have traded breaks, so Gabi still has the upper hand, 7-6(2) 4-2*

2 DF in the TB from Lu, plus Laura being patient, keeping the ball in play and waiting for opportunities rather than trying to force it too much, and very effectively! 6-3 7-6(0)
Pretty good throughout, BH especially useful today.

And Gabi saves a BP, and takes her second MP to follow suit, and rounds out a fabulous morning! 7-6(2) 6-2

Three seeds dispatched and not a set lost by a British player
Very well done ladies

Three unseeded Brits beat three seeded opponents in straight sets. Great morning's work. Good to see they avoid each other in the QF.

Just been following that last half hour - astonishing! Katy was still 0-6 v Hozumi in AUS too (when she finally beat her last year, it was in the US)
