Is Neal clearly a better option than Ken these days?
On the face it it is mainly because he has played more with other partners that he is higher ranked than Ken. Although rankings anyway are a less reliable indicator than singles for who would be best since they have partners and need to form a Davis Cup partnership that they will at best have rarely formed before. Well, unless they play Neal & Ken together. I've been quite impressed with the little I've seen of Neal but not seen enough to make any real judgement.
I wonder too if Joe in time might come into the equation.
I was being slightly tongue in cheek to be honest; Dom obviously is still a good player, he reached the AO semifinals and clearly cant be written off, but his form yesterday was poor and I was throwing Neal out there. Neal and Ken (more slowly) and Joe all rising up the ranks is clearly a good thing and if it puts pressure on Dom then that is good. Whether any of their games would gel with Jamie, I dont know enough of them to say, but this weekend's doubles was poor and so having options would be useful.
Whether Cam, Kyle, or Liam (or Dan down the line?) could play doubles, I am not sure, there is no real evidence I think to say they have the game, but others may know more about their doubles pedigree. Andy clearly does have the pedigree, but I guess we cant expect to rely upon him for DC or for 3 DC rubbers in a weekend in the future, certainly not for September...
Of the four you mention JonH, I would say Evo is the more natural doubles player, particularly with his touch and feel around the net. Liam has plenty of pedigree, particularly at junior level, and would be (for me at least) the next best choice out of those singles specialists. On the right day, and surface, against the right opponents, Ive no doubt any of them could do a job, though with the 5-man teams now Id still prefer to see a couple of dedicated doubles players named. Will be interesting to see how far Ken and Neal can keep going, and particularly Joe who I feel has the talent and skills to make his way up to the top tiers of the doubles circuit.
