As an aside - seems like Sandgren has some "interesting" and controversial views - he played them down in his interview but this blog from November 2016 suggests there is more to it than meets the eye:
I was blissfully unaware but it all makes a lot of sense it is the natural demographic of the US tennis player but not necessarily that of the most talented or academic. Gibbs and Blake are a breath of fresh air.
I'll put the response in a spoiler, as it's political, and people shouldn't have to read that here unless they choose to.
Spoiler
I know a fair bit about US extreme right-wingers, as it intersects with work. The names I'm seeing here are some of the worst, 4chan, 8chan hatemongers. Looking through his historical Twitter, he's got them all. Start at Tommy Robinson and go about 50 light years right and that's what he has publicly endorsed: 9/11 conspiracies, holocaust deniers, proponents of vigilante justice on immigrants or even those that just 'look like immigrants'. Whewee!
Hard right opinions are fair enough, not my politics, but you're entitled to your view. This is beyond that. This is radicalised. Do his sponsors know about this?
And, in between a retweet of Cernovich - a thoroughly nasty piece of work (see spolier - not for sensitive folks) -
Spoiler
who recently tried to infiltrate a protest with a 'Rape Melania' banner to paint supposed womens marchers in a bad light, with the aim of blaming it on Antifa
and a general racial slur against Mexicans, is an unfortunate and entirely unwitting endorsement from Dan Smethurst.
Well, Chung seems like an exciting prospect, good story and decent chap anyway, but now I doubly hope he dismisses Mr. Sandgren in the QF.

doesnt paint him a good light. Hides behind being a Christian in the interview, being frank there is no evidence I can see in his tweets of a Christian faith but I may have missed it. And in America there are some blurred lines between Christian faith and anti islamic views of which he has retweeted plenty. (noting I say this as a confirmed Christian).
Worrying views. Not impressed and frankly the guy has some explaining to do.
PS not the first tennis player to be associated with the far right, a certain Buster Mottram had some history in that space

Yes, I read that article and immediately Chung gets my support.... and every opponent of Sandgren from now on. There was a Guardian article on his deleted twitter account too. Really nasty stuff as blob says, and quite surprising really from a professional tennis player on the globally diverse international tour. Absolutely don't need players believing in and supporting that kind of stuff. It's harmful.
Sandgren seems to be trying cover his tracks and deleting all his old twitter stuff as well as making out it doesnt represent him. Whether it does or not, this and Phil Neville's twitter remarks from 6 years ago exposed today (ie new England womens manager tweeted about battering his wife...doesnt really look to good, eh Phil?) makes me wonder - how stupid are these people? Do they think that they tweet what they want and then one day not expect it to bite them when they are perhaps more in the public eye? Any young person who is looking to enter the world of employment or politics should really go back and delete anything that in the cold light of day looks bad, if not they will get bitten in due course and probably deservedly so!
Wow that's evidently a hell of a lot of really nasty stuff ( to most people ) that supposedly didn't represent Sandgren's views.
If he is thoroughly embarrassed by it all ( suddenly hmm coincidentally when he is more in the public eye ) and genuinely has radically changed his thoughts for the better, very good and I look forward to no reiteration of such stuff again. But don't give us that bull**** mate.
It's always been a little concerning that much of America seems err weird and often in a dangerous way, but if it is a majority, or close to it, then that is even more concerning.
