Zverev- over hyped rubbish

Alex Zverev.

Has now played 11 grand slams, and is yet to beat a top 50 player or go past the 4th round.

In order to keep tennis  current, ATP over hyped this kid, and tried to make him a poster boy. What a failure it has been.

You are absolutely correct that his performances in Slams have not been as good as his other performances, but going into the tournament, he was ranked WR4 at 20 years old. I wish my successes were as good as failures.

Taking away the hyperbolic excesses, zverev is of course a talent but indeed has not yet delivered on the promise.

Whether he will or not we shall see- I for one like Chung, Kyrgios, and think one of them will win a slam before Zverev but I also think we will see zverev in top 5 or so for a long while, even if not number 1.

Zverev has a poor showing (so far) in slams Yes but he did win 2 Masters last year so can beat the top players (albeit in a best of 3)

At least he is more relevant than the WTA's Genie Bouchard machine - now that is a player who is irrelevant and overhyped.

This is where one could remind everyone (or Vandy, in particular) of Wertheim's Ode to Federer, Safin and Haas, in 2003, where Roger was considered by everyone to be the cowardly lion because he didn't have the guts to win a major.

(Federer)
If you want to win a wager,
Bet against me in a major,
I can barely hold my serve.
I play exquisitely in patches,
But choke in big-time matches,
Because I have no nerve.

Too bad I'm not more gallant,
I have sick amounts of talent,
Plus, I play with verve.
But there's love and not much kissing
When I'm doing my Swiss missing,
If I only had some nerve.

A potentially big payday
Is met with cries of "Roger? Mayday!"
My results form a sine curve.
My vast unmet potential
Owes to factors existential,
If I only had some nerve

Never seen this. Rather clever (and in the passage of time, utterly wrong).
Love that song; love that film.

No comparison, at this stage Fedex had reached both French and Wimb QF and also beaten Sampras in a grand slam.

 I agree there's no comparison.

AND YET people were STILL saying Federer was a choker.

That's my point.

I know, clever, isn't it? Here's the Safin bit:

(Safin)
When I'm losing, say, to Hewitt
My inner voice says, "Screw it,"
And I start to go insane.
Ill-equipped to hack it,
I smack and crack my racket.
If I only had a brain.

My foe hits a lucky let cord
And, just like that, I get real bored,
Concentrating is such a pain.
But I forget my double faults
With rounds of single malts,
Which does wonders for my brain.

With a disconnected plug and socket
I'm wired like a Russian rocket,
Though I came of age in Spain.
Attention: Sergo Tacchini,
My career might soon be finis
If I cannot improve my brain.

And the Haas:

(Haas)
My tennis can be symphonic,
Cool and refreshing like a (Teu)tonic,
Mixed with equal parts of gin.
But in Rome, Nice or Miami,
I am apt to pull a hammy --
You see, I'm made of tin.

My game has yet to smolder
Because of my back and hip and shoulder,
That's why I seldom win.
Lying on the training table
"Injury prone" is my sad label,
Because I'm made of tin

Rehabbing in Colorado,
They ask if the Haas avocado
Was my equally soft kin.
I would be both wealthier and wiser
Such a healthier young kaiser,
If I weren't made of tin.

Wow, QFs eh, bit desperate. Clearly that Fed choker is going to be a huge star not. Bah, an over hyped pretty tennis player with a silly pony tail.

Was the obvious trump but very elegantly played, CD

Comparing Fed 1999-2002 to current Zverev is trolling.  Zverev has been pushed in our faces on every poster, adn hyped by the ATP, whom are worried that when the big 4 die, they will not make money, so in a desperate attempt, they have tried to make this kid relevant.

That of course is not his fault, but makes it worse, is that the brat believes this hype.

What the ATP need is a rivalry or two coming through to focus on and big up. Dimitrov v Kyrgios was the best entertainment I have seen in a long while (actually, Kyrgios v Tsonga wasnt too bad either) and I think they ignore those guys and their marketability at their peril. That one could run if they both keep their minds focused and want to achieve what their talents should.

And then they need an American/North American , a West European and an Asian to push. Shapovalov fits the first bill, Chung maybe the Asian bill and why not Kyle fitting the post Murray role for Europe.

If those guys can push on, there would be some very interesting and exciting matches ahead:

Dimitrov

Kyrgios

Shapovalov

Edmund

Chung
