Coaches - GB coaches and foreign coaches of GB players

Based on paulisi's message on the Bolton thread, just a little shout out here for Alex Ward, a seemingly really nice guy, very good tennis player and now a coach who is really making a difference to young Jodie Burrage.

Just seen this CD, apologies! So how much would someone like Alex ward earn and who would pay him. Clearly he can't be on 10 percent of prize money as Jodie earn too little so would LTA pay him a salary? 30k a year plus travel expenses?

No idea how it works, but Alex is coaching at JTC. If Jodie is fully funded, I would be certain that the LTA would cover his wages.

Would assume he gets a salary from JTC and is 'assigned' to Jodie.  Would guess some of her funding goes to JTC as the provider of coaching to her.

Thank you to @Bambo290 for joining us for midlands @the_LTA Regional Training. All players thrived on his sharing of knowledge and the chance to play with him. #playerpathway

Not sure exactly where to put this but I do think we have found a young GB coach in the making so this thread seems as good as any.

Good heavens, any young kid who has the patience to keep throwing up a ball like that, is definitely a coach in the making! biggrin

 Loved that smile

The littl'un is obviously so pleased to be needed by 'big bro'

And, yes, definite potential there.....

Sure it's been posted but good to hear that Dan Smethurst is in JoKo's camp out in Rome.

Don't know what his exact title is but good luck to the pair of them.

I've seen Dan in Jo's box at a couple of other tournaments recently. Not sure when the first one was - possibly Miami.

Don't know if we have a thread for ex-GB players and what they're up to now but as she's a coach, this seems a good place.

I expect some people remember Julie Pullin - GB player who got to about WTA 125, back around 2000 time, won a MD round at the Aussie Open, won quite a few ITF tournaments, got a lot of stick for getting WCs every year into Wimbly and not winning (but she was hardly the only one).

Anyway, she's now head coach down at the Pavilion and Avenue Tennis Club in Brighton.

Because junior Sonay Kartal (an interesting little player whom I've always followed) comes from down there, I saw this article from a couple of days ago:

www.brightonandhovenews.org/2019/05/18/former-british-tennis-no-1-hosts-open-day-in-hove/

It doesn't really say much but just to let people know where Julie is now, if anyone likes updates on our ex-players....

Josh Sapwell was one of our most promising youngsters - made the QFs of Wimbly juniors and won the Orange Bowl.

Plagued by injury, though, I now see that he is now joined the coaching team at BETA (Berkhamstead Elite Tennis Academy)

All the best to him.

As reported by JonH on the RG thread, here's a shout out for Nick Brown, coach of the 2001-born junior currently in the last 16 (!) of Roland Garros:

In an interview published on Friday, Iga said (translated)
"Now, for example, the coach invited Nick Brown (a former player who works with PZT), with whom I had the opportunity to practice in Warsaw. Nick tried to teach me then, volley, which is sometimes quite difficult art ... I laugh because it is. Here he comments on matches, accepted the invitation to classes and is great. "

Piotr Sierzputowski:
" I still lead Ig in a relatively short time, but I still try to draw as much as possible from others. A good trainer must be open today. Nick Brown is our main consultant. Coach, commentator with a great eye, former player who played in the third round of Wimbledon. On many issues, I may disagree with him, but when we sit at the table, we always discuss the best Iga's interest. With him in Cambridge we will practice for example before the season on the grass. And it is these valuable people who need to look for the most"
