Australian Open Predictions - men

Well SuperT, you have no conflict of interest anymore. With Rafa retiring, it's Kyle v Cilic.

Indeed.  But such a shame to see Rafa retire.  I would have loved to see Kyle play him in his current form.

Strong start. Only 6 more matches to go.

Two down, five to go.

Three down, four to go.

Four down, three to go smile

Five down, two to go.  Anybody else starting (daring) to believe yet ? smilesmilesmilesmilesmile

 Yet?

I'm the other Kyle vote - I was there along along!

The mystery voter is revealed. smile Good on ya, Christ.  We're going all the way.

So Chung gets through (yay) to semis alongside Edmund. Amazing

Like for the women, a majority of us still have their predicted winner at the SF stage, 9 out of 15.

Rather helps that Fed's 7 are included but he had to find a partner for an overall majority and who could be better than Kyle and his 2 backers

The old guard are just about still standing and holding fort though some of their number have tottered off and resources are depleted, and there are a couple of whipper snappers waiting in the wings wanting to take their place.

The under 25 / 25 to 29 / 30 and over representatives proportions held steady from the L32 through the L16 and QFs ( as I did my nothing to see here stuff ) but the 2 young uns then changed the balance, putting us on the verge of something rather big and not just parochially.

L32: 7 / 13 / 12

L16: 4 / 6 / 6

QF: 2 / 3 / 3

SF : 2 / 1 / 1

So the near half that said Fed have their man in the final.

Ultimately the guard hasn't changed at the very sharp end. How much it will in the short term seems to me to be more in the hands of how many ( and who ) of the existing guard can keep fit / restore fitness than the others in general having yet shown that they are truly ready to take over on a more level playing field. Much credit of course to Edmund and Chung here, but others have faltered in a more open field than usual.

Even beyond general fitness, of course connected to age and years on the tour, age itself will increasingly have an effect even if the odd Swiss chap seems still to defy it.
