Clearly first match of the season for both Kyle and Denis. But good for Kyle to start with such a win in a tight match. And with his 3 set issues, it could be an early boost for his confidence.
Really pity about Andy but I imagine most folk are not surprised. I wasn't picking up great vibes. There's more than a couple of months before Indian Wells and Miami. They look far more realistic targets than the Aussie Open. I'd really prefer he didn't put himself through a repeat of trying in vain for the US Open.or actually giving it a go when he's not ready and not helping himself long term.
Just to repeat the general feeling - brilliant result from Kyle - a tough three set win - a THREE set win - who's have thought it???
And Andy seems to be part of a rather sad group - Novak isn't ready yet, Nishikori's injury is miles of being better, I'm not writing any of them off but it's sad to see....

Fab result for Kedders. Really pleased to see him come through this, especially on a generally quicker hard court surface, which would better suit Shapchap I think. Onwards and upwards, great start to the year.
A very enjoyable win! Kyle now set up with a coaching team used to looking after top 10 players. An exciting year ahead. He will see a lot of Shapovalov over the next decade.
Not sure whether to put this result here or in the Remarkable Non GB thread but Alex de Minaur has just taken out Milos Roanic in straight sets. And to think that just 2 years ago I was watching him in Murcia Futures where he nearly went out to Billy Harris.

Yep, I had 50p on young Alex so am smiling
But I think it almost should go in the 'Andy' thread - it's Milos' first venture back since injury, Stan, Novak and Kei are all still sidelined, Andy too, it's the walking wounded lot who really are not match fit nor match ready.
R2 : Istomin (WR 63) v Donaldson (WR 54)
R2 : Harrison (WR 47) v Hanfmann (WR 119)
So one of those 6 will be a finalist. Compare that with the top half which still has Dimitrov, Kyrgios, Dolgopolov and (of course) Kedders amongst others.
Kyle was the better player in the 1st set but in the end had to come from behind in the TB. From *1-3 down though, he won 6 points in a row to deservedly take the set 7-6(3).
