How fickle tennis is, last time we saw her we rooted for her alongside Anna, now, it's no-no-Nicole.
R16: Naomi BROADY/Maria IRIGOYEN (GBR/ARG) [3] 156 (83 + 73) v. Madison BRENGLE/Nicole MELICHAR (USA/USA) 218 (179 + 39)
Yes, sadly with Anna helping to boost her doubles ranking to a CH39, Nicole has clearly decided onwards and upwards now is without Anna. I do hope Anna, who is also at a CH, finds a good, regular, doubles specialist partner soon for at least the early months of the year. I think it was said she is playing with Naomi for the Aus Open, which means she hasn't found anyone yet.
All over in singles; Katie has lots of learninig to do at this level, and mustn't be discouraged if more matches end up lopsided like this one seems to.
QR2: Katie BOULTER (GBR) 200 lost to Ysaline BONAVENTURE (BEL) [q2] 183 1-6 1-6 QR2: Naomi BROADY [q4] 116 lost to Viktoria KUZMOVA (SVK) 138 2-6 4-6
Bonaventure isn't seeded, indeed not that much higher ranked than Katie. She beat the q2 seed in QR1.
But still clearly a pretty decent player, with that opening win here and a CH 141 from 2016, and while a bit of a disappointing start to the year I generally agree your comments re Katie. Onward ...
Julia Goerges beat Caroline Wozniacki in the final. Having won the Moscow Premier and Elite Trophy titles at the end of last season and now this she has won 14 successive matches and at 29 yo will rise to a CH 12. Gorgeous Goerges form!
I have subsequently seen that Julia has withdrawn from Sydney with a "right knee injury". Hope for her that this is just precautionary.
