Tsk, Tsk. Emily & Maria Fernanda blot their copy book. Had chances at 6-0 5-0* but blew it. Unforgivable.

I note that Ms Barona Estrada is just 14 yrs old. A bit intimidating for the poor girl to be drawn against the #1 seeds, including her #2 ranked (in singles) country woman.
The singles blip has not impeded Ms. Appleton's blinding doubles form; still on for a third straight title. 21-7 in MD doubles in 2017.

Interesting re Emily's singles year. This is the first time this year that she has lost to anyone ranked outside the top 900 or unranked. And Sewing is clearly underranked at this stage, from a very limited senior schedule, so even that is probably not really a blip. But Emily has struggled to get wins against higher ranked opponents. Some decent performances in defeat and the one notable high of her CH win against then WR 463 Caitlin Whorisky in the FQR of the Sumter SC 25K. Her next best was a win over the then WR 856. Her recent Colombia run to the final featured two wins against lower ranked players and two against unranked players, and she has very consistently got the job done in such matches.
2017 singles record ( including qualifying ) : vs WRs up to 900 : Won 2, Lost 18 vs WRs 901 on & UNR : Won 16, Lost 1 Overall : Won 18, Lost 19
Hopefully in 2018 she can really push up a level and get more higher ranked wins to help her more often push on through draws.
Straight into the final then, the opponents having had about 2 hours extra rest, and Sewing had extra rest after her singles over Herazo Gonzalez, too.
Anyway, here we go, *1-3

I'm going to project that, through no fault of their own, that's a rather sad and ignoble way for such a great run to come to its end

I wonder why they did that, that's a bit ridiculous? It meant MFHG - and Sofia Sewing, Emily's R1 vanquisher, who is still going - both had to play 3 matches today. A bit unnecessarily crazy it would seem.... And a farcicial way indeed to end a successful doubles run, against Emily's last tournament winning co-partner, Maria Jose, it must be said too, whose unbeaten run therefore continues...
