Mens group 1:
After a 3-3 singles, Herts lose all 3 doubles matches to end 3-6 to Kent. Essex defeat Cheshire 5-4

Nice to see so many familiar names, the Corrie are both on the list to play for Herts as is one of my faves Neil Bamford (defeated Nick Brooks in a third set tie break) and also a number of former college players. Not so many current ones as this tournament starts a few weeks to early IMO and many are still at college.

Essex Men are National Div 1 county Champions

A fantastic performance from the Essex team, Dave, Anthony, Anthony W, Fred, Kai, Marshall, Ed, Joel and Tom (Captain) who beat Cheshire, Kent and Hertfordshire over the weekend in Bath. Essex men have had a very successful time in Div 1 winning this event 3 out of the last 4 times. Tom capt/player is very proud of his team and their unbelievable fighting spirit

Special mention to Dave Wright and Ed Pudney winning all their matches and Marshall and Anthony Wright winning all their singles. It was also encouraging to see some new faces join the team well done boys!

Winter County Cup 2025

A one-off three-day weekend event, taking place at venues around the nation every year. Players compete in both singles and doubles. The 44 counties are placed in 22 groups of four counties per gender. These groups are placed in order of the previous years results with Group 1 being the premier league. Final positions are based on how each county performs within that particular group with top teams getting promoted to the next group and bottom teams relegated to the group below.

The Group 1 event was won by Surrey Men and Avon ladies - well done to all who competed in this  fantastic event throughout all groups. Sadly seems like this event wont be continuing cry

Jed Alexander (Scotland North) has an instagram page  and Change.Org have a petition urging the LTA, to rethink their decision.

More on the cancellation of WCC:

*Derbyshire man Rob Salmon is calling for action from the Lawn Tennis Association following the cancellation of the Winter County Cup.

Salmon has since created a facebook group called 'Friends of County Cup' and has now launched a new campaign called 'LTA we deserve a say'.

www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002r2j4

An LTA Spokesperson has told BBC Derby Sport

"We understand that some people feel passionately about the Winter County Cup (WCC) and are disappointed with the decision taken. We have explained the reasons for the decision which we stand by.

The cost of WCC is disproportionately high compared to other county competitions, servicing a small number of unique players, and we have an obligation to invest our resources in activity that reaches a wide audience and opens tennis up to new and different people.

"We have committed to reinvesting 100% of the funding for WCC directly through Counties into competitions and initiatives that reach and benefit a larger and wider player base, particularly junior players.

This year we are reviewing County Cup Competitions more widely to understand how we can strengthen and protect them for the long term. This review includes investigating if a different format could replace the WCC. The scope of the review will be clearly defined, and we are committed to consulting with County Cup stakeholders and groups. *
