Week 47 - Challenger ($100,000+H) - Bengaluru Open, Bangalore, India (hard)

It is amazing how far he has progressed in such a short time. I watched him play at Sutton in the British Tour just over a year ago - and now he's on the verge of slam qualies !

Next year is going to be very interesting, to say the least !

Shame he didn't win it but what a week.

That's him done for 2017 then?

Excited to see what he can do in 2018. Would be good to see him and Liam push each other on.

Many congrats to Jay, who soars into the ATP top 250 at 220, up 59 Hopefully he has now done enough to get into Aus Open qualies (at least after withdrawals) even after his two Futures titles in Egypt last December come off.

I think the following are the only Brits who have made it into the ATP singles top 250 as teenagers since 1990, in age order splitting yy-m ties by days:

18-1 Andy
18-7 Greg
18-7 Brydan
19-2 Evo
19-4 Jay
19-6 Tim
19-6 Kyle

Greg and Brydan weren't playing for GB when they made the top 250 for the first time, so Jay is right in the middle of the five who made the ATP singles top 250 as British teenagers. I may have missed someone but the most obvious others, i.e. Martin Lee, Aljaz Bedene, James Ward, Richard Bloomfield and Dan Cox definitely didn't make it before age 20.

I didnt realise Brydan had become a competent challenger player so young. Reassuringly Jay has very little in common with Brydan around capacity to control his emotions when things dont go his way. Jay has put himself in a great position to break the top 200 as a teen bring on 2018!

Worth noting that from these other top 250 players as teenagers Andy, Tim and Greg have CHs of 1, 4, and 4 whilst Kyle and Dan ( hopefully both still with many years to go yet, particularly Kyle ) so far have CHs of 40 and 41.

So Brydan is certainly the outlier with a CH 169 from 2015. He already had a JCH of 4 before his early senior progress but then has spent his 20s with his ranking, temperament and nationality drifting about at times.

Still so much will be down to Jay but these look good general precedents and with his temperament, apparent learning ability and good folk around him, one's got to be hopeful about the future.

Fantastic Jay..
From the thread it would seem like a similar list for top200 GB players as teens but how many brits made top100 by 21?

3 before their 21st birthday, 1 more shortly after.

18-4 Andy

20-1 Greg

20-7 Kyle

21-2 Tim

Yes, I am sure Jay would like to be in that mix. He turns 21 on 27/07/19.
