No British involvement as far as I am aware in the G2 events this week, but amongst the G4/5s we have young starlet Matilda Mutavdzic playing her second ITF event, having won her first one in September. Although she is playing a seed, her opponent doesn't appear to have a particularly strong record this year, though CD may know more about her.
I've gone and looked up Océane Mialon as I'd never heard of her. (I really dislike the name Océane - and yet there are tons of them in France- why would you call your child 'Ocean'?).
She is ranked -4/6 which is pretty good, but not amazing, for a female player born in 2000. Played a huge number of matches, as normal. She lost to Esther Adeshina last year. And Olivia Elliott. And went up from -2/6 to -4/6 this October, with the new sporting year starting and the new rankings released. But mainly on the back of playing a lot of matches, rather than some extra fine wins.
Difficult to know what level young Matilda is but it would certainly seem a 'playable' match.
Interesting - and interesting reflections on the names. French go for oceans; in English we seem of late to have a fashion for 'River'. Can't recall any similarly water-based names in other languages ...
I think it is related to our weather, too much precipitation in the U.K. we are much less interested in the solid state.
Misty is pretty cool (indeed spectacularly so in breaking bad) and well Foggy as a moniker is about as good as it gets.... Dewhurst .... Nelson......and Carl Foggy Fogerty so good they named him twice!
A bit disappointing that there is only one ocean in the nature elements indoor open I mean the event it self is a bit of a tautology, its not like they even tried.
Not wanting to go over old ground but its getting to that time of year again when A131 and Indy host the annual debate but surely this settles it, this tournament alone is the reason they have wildcards.
And there's always Brook(e) - lots of those in the States.
Which is strange because, although it's still daft, I thought Ocean maybe made sense because it's big and grand (you wouldn't call the child 'puddle').
And that tied in with River.
But Brook obviously goes against that.
Lots of kids now called Sky too (not 'wet' as such, but definitely a natural element and wet-ish.
Good spots with Misty and Foggy, Oakie - Misty actually is rather sweet.
And, yes, Brume (French for Mist) is both a surname and - rare - a first name - there has to be a player somewhere called Brume who should have had a wildcard. Cyrus is also a name, think it's a Greek conqueror but it's obviously also the French for cirrus clouds too.
There are also zillions of girls in France called 'Marine' - which I guess is like being called 'Oceany'.....

I didn't notice that this was a senior Slam main draw.
