Week 45 - ITF ($25K) - Shrewsbury, GB Hard

Well, that scuppered that, as both then instantly lost the first sets, 6-4 and 6-3

I'll crawl back into my hole now.....

The doubles draw is out, and there are some really good potential QF and SF matches, assuming they get that far.
For example,
Freya Christie/Harriet Dart v Beth Grey/Sam Murray (SF)
Maia Lumsden/Katie Swan v Emily Webley-Smith/Anna Vrijic (QF)

All matches went to form.
Summer Yardley has improved a lot since I last saw her and was very competitive.
Tiffany William is all power, but was very erratic.
Hannah played a typical Hannah game - very patchy.
Emma Hurst's was poor in the first set, but got her game together and was hitting a lot of winners in sets 2 &. 3 and was the better play for most. Should have served it out and had chances in the tie break, but looked the weaker mentally( though Fayol netted on match point at the net with an open court)
Draw is at 6.30 in the lounge.
The Shrewsbury Club is in the middle of a 1.25m upgrade, but little has been done to improve spectator facilities yet. This is funded by sale of land for housing. The builders have thrown in 10k to the prize money as it is a building site outside.

Friedsam will be the tournament favourite. She was very good today.

OOP is out
2 guaranteed GB wins, but generally tough matches for our girls.

The guaranteed GB wins are in the same quarter cry

Eden SILVA (GBR) (WC) v Alicia BARNETT (GBR) (Q)
Freya CHRISTIE (GBR) v Harriet DART (GBR) [8] cry

But no-one has to play Friedsam (not before QF anyway) wink

Not saying they'll win but we've got pretty good draws !

Emily W-S gets a fellow qualifier.  Katie Swan gets a qualifier (and even though it's Barritza, that's better than many other options). Beth and Maia get unseeded players. Eden, Alicia, Freya and Harriet all play each other with a guaranteed QF place on offer.

Only Sam and Jodie have really drawn short straws on paper, getting the second and third seeds.

Looking properly at the draws and what I've seen today:
EWS has drawn a very good junior, who looked very good. Tough match for Emily
Eden turned Alicia over on the Wirral, so should be favourite
Harriet v Freya is too close to call.
Beth looks to have a good chance, but looked a little tired today(Laura played well)
Katie S should comfortably beat Barritza
Jodie has a tough match, but Beth pushed her opponent really close a few weeks ago.
Maia should be too good for Vrljic, who is way past her best
Sam has a real tough one against a girl who is dropping down from success at a higher level.
I'll also predict the top seed we get knocked out tomorrow.

Thanks, paulisi, looks a pretty balanced draw, and was going to be tough for some, can't complain jn general.

A gathering together in R1 of much of the mid to slightly upper range of our ranked players. GB ranks 6 and 8 then 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 and finally 21.

Yes I see the Chinese girl playing Lesley Kerkhove, the top seed, was a former junior #1. Could be an interesting match that. I hope Sam is up for it too, and at least can give the #2 seed a good game too.

Maia has taken the first set in very good speed, winning 6-1 in 30 mins.

Freya too the first set v Harriet, and was a break up, but it's now back on serve
