Week 44 - ITF ($15K) - Sunderland, GB Hard

With all 16 matches now completed there is confirmation of what we all perceived to be a very weak qualifying competition. Only one came through and that was at the expense of another qualifier!

Well done Richie - another youngster with a point.

Today seems to be an excellent example of what home events are all about:

* a couple of 'wowzer' results - well done, Tiffany !
* or nearly 'wowzer' results - well played, Beth. And Ella.
* some decent wins by our better ranked players - well done Freya, and Jodie, and Maia...
* some good performances by those returning from injury - well done, Laura S. And Freya again.
* some decent efforts by those seriously outranked on paper - great effort by Ola. And well done to Kira too.
* some nice one-pointer wins by youngsters with 'easier' matches - great that Tanysha's off the mark, and Erin too.

What's not to love ????

Emma Hurst also coming back from long-term injury.

And if it needs subsidising to have a few more surely a very good use of LTA funds. Though should also continue to look to any other avenue that will make it more attractive for clubs to host such events.

Terrific win for Beth, but I can see my tournament favourite in her quarter for the second week running...

Quite a decent day for the Brits

Oh yes, you said last week that you were going for Maia this week... smile

Easy wins for Tiffany William and Jodie Burrage as another pesky bites the dust.

Sarah Beth Grey has had a titanic first set.

Surprise of the day so far is Beth's loss to the 18 yr old French girl Lucie Wargnier 7-6(7) 6-2. So digging a bit further see that Lucie did have a JCH 39 back in Jan 15 but that is still some performance of hers.

Laura S is also a set and now break down to Erin Richardson 3-6 4-5* and Maia is a set down to Margot Yerolymos 4-6 2-1*

Yerolymos just served for the match at *5-4, but got broken back.

By overturning WR 474, Kordolaimi, Alicia earns a new career high scalp

Also, nice for JAB to overturn Bejenaru. The Romanian has been the chief Brit-basher in 2017 so far, in terms of most voctories over Brits (though not in terms of %), and this win at least improves us a little bit on that account, to 3-8.

That repeat of last week's Beth vs Maia QF that is now not going to happen because Beth has lost.. the question is whether even Maia is actually going to make the QF or not. Margot has just served for the second set and match - and been broken to love by Maia. Maia just about holds serve in the next on the 3rd deuce 4-6 6-5*

Congrats too to Erin for a big win over Laura S 6-3 6-4 and her 2nd point now

And Maia has completed digging her way out of that hole. Takes the 2nd set and holds at the start of the 3rd, so 4 games in a row now 4-6 7-5 1-0*
