Week 44 - ATP Masters 1000 - Paris, France (hard)

Mahut is injured - having an MRI last night - so may well pull out, with both the O2 and (I suspect more crucially) the Davis Cup finals still on the radar.

After Nadal's withdrawal the match has been put on centre court so looks like he'll be giving it a go at least.

An interesting and loaded doubles QFs :

(1) Kontinen & Peers vs (7) Dodig & Granollers
(3) Bryan & Bryan vs (6) Rojer & Tecau

The bottom half of the draw we already know about.  Interesting top half, though:

SF:  (7) Ivan Dodig & Marcel Granollers (CRO/ESP) CR 23 (6+17) vs (6) Jean-Julien Rojer & Horia Tecau (NED/ROU) CR 25 (12+13)

With Kontinen & Peers dropping a total of 2500 points from Paris and the O2 last year and losing today, Kubot & Melo are already confirmed as taking over as WR 1 and WR 2 post Paris ( I believe on the same points as each other and I haven't looked into who might be ahead on tiebreakers ).

So just rest on your laurels, guys.

Not looking good for Jamie a set and a break down.

Watched a few games of that match - usual spark seemed to be missing from both Bruno and Jamie

Such a shame Kyle couldn't hold it together in that match - Sock is about to win the title with a double break lead in the third against the qualifier Krajinovic! If he wins, he'll also go 8th in the world and qualify for the O2. The margins in this sport can be so incredibly fine sometimes.

Jack Sock wins the final 5-7 6-4 6-1 and indeed qualifies for the O2. 'Just' WR 9 ( Stan is still WR 7 ) but still significantly betters his previous CH 14.

Jack Sock winning means the European run of consecutive Masters and GS winners stops at 107.

How many times has Kyle lost in the third set of matches this year?

In the third set of best of three matches :

Against top 40 players : he is 0-9 ( the first 8 were 3-6 or 4-6, the latest one this last week against Sock 6-7(5) having been 5-1 up )

Against top 50 players : he is 1-11 ( he beat Steve Johnson, then WR 46, in the ATP 250 Winston-Salem QF in his pre US Open run )

Against all players : he is 7-17

Jack Sock winning a masters is a complete sporting mystery, on the same level as the Shergar saga.

Not really a mystery when you look at the field, particularly when Rafa decided to give a walkover as soon as he was sure of clinching year end number one.  I hope to see some major health improvements amongst the top players in the next couple of months because on the whole 2017 has been a joke at the top end of the game and not really pleasant to watch.
