Week 44 - ATP Masters 1000 - Paris, France (hard)

Not going to win matches at this level with such low serving percentages

Took the second on a tiebreak after getting a VERY lucky net cord at 7-7 on his serve.

Serving and playing much better now it has to be said. I fancy him to come through now.

A couple of months ago he would have lost this sort of match so well done Kyle! Seems to have a lot more presence on the court too which is great to see!

For the record:

L48:  Kyle Edmund WR 50 defeated (LL) Evgeny Donskoy (RUS) WR 76 by 5-7 7-6(7) 6-3

Phew animated emoticon

*****

L32:  (16) Jack Sock (USA) WR 22 (CH = 14 in April) vs Kyle Edmund WR 50

Kyle leads the head-to-head by 1-0 (quarter-final in Atlanta on hard earlier this year, 4 & 1.

So with Aljaz having (probably) finished for the year and Kyle in his last tournament, the GB Nš2 spot is on the line in the next match. Aljaz is on 993 points and Kyle on 992. Couldn't get much closer than that.

Sounds like some good fight from Kyle today.

Great result, good to see him grind it out when not every part of his game was firing.

I had wondered if Aljaz would have to take a compulsory zero in place of his lowest counter of 20. But since he was not an original acceptance ( although would have got in with withdrawals if he himself hadn't withdrawn ) I am pretty sure he will be OK on that. So retains that massive live lead.

Good to battle out such a win and good to hear a couple of mentions lately of more presence about him.

I have said before ( and I'm not alone ) that I think he could do with much more presence, send messages across the net and I think you can possibly help your own game positivity. But it needs time and not forced or fake ( not at all suggesting it is with Kyle, especially as I haven't been watching, and as I say good to hear ).

There's some highlights on YT: www.youtube.com/watch

That net cord was pretty jammy! Good for Kyle, hope he can beat Sock next.

Thanks for linking the highlights FW. What I am seeing is the beginnings of things we have discussed many times on this board. I definitely see improvement in the backhand slice and we had some volleys, drop shots and even a lob or two thrown in. I am sure these aspects of Kyle's game are "work in progress", but it is good to see him bringing that much discussed variety to his game.

I still think it may take another 6 months to a year to bed in completely and I wouldn't be surprised if the ranking sits where it is during that period. but the longer term prospects are looking good. And there is definitely more of a presence on court. I saw that against Pouille last week and that was confirmed today.

His mobility has improved too. Benefits of training with Andy perhaps.
