So PCB will get his chance, as first alternate after Nadal's opening loss and subsequent withdrawal. He plays Thiem on Wednesday. That group becomes Thiem, Dimitrov, Goffin and Carreno Busta.
Whatever else though it's been another day of tight matches.
Yes, despite the absence of some big names, the matches have been v tight and on face value quite exciting - I havent seen anything other than the highlights though but Sock and Cilic did look a good match and Sock played very well in the clutch points. Feel sorry for Carreno Busta in that he has to win two matches straight off the bat to have any chance of qualifying, I dont actually understand what the point of Nadal playing that first match was as someone dropping out clearly causes an imbalance in the draw that could have been avoided.
Although I guess Andy did something similar at the US Open so hard to cast stones!
In the final matches Kubot & Melo play Murray & Soares with the Bryans playing Dodig & Granollers.
So if Jamie & Bruno and the Bryans win their final matches we are in a 3 way tiebreak 2/2/2/0 wins situation and Jamie & Bruno losing in 3 sets before today's emphatic win would so far have them looking good in a TB ( actually probably now difficult for them not to be in the two that would progress in that scenario ).
Also if Jamie & Bruno and the Bryans both lose, there would be a 3 way tiebreak 3/1/1/1. Again Jamie & Bruno looking good if involved in that scenario ( though here they would have to have the best record of the three pairs involved ).
For now I purely show the Bryans in second based on their head to head win over Jamie & Bruno but in a 3 way tiebreak the head to heads would cancel out and it come down to overall sets and possibly games. Hence why today's big win could matter.
I suspect the Bryans may well win, in which case Jamie & Bruno will have to beat the so far undefeated Kubot & Melo to get into that tiebreak on 2 wins.
If Jamie & Bruno win and the Bryans lose they would clearly go through ( and as group winners ). Vice versa and they are out.
Always much simpler if the two on 1 win are playing each other in the final match, as in the other section !! ( but you can't arrange that and they do schedule the second matches in the best way they can ).

Sock v Zverev fascinating to watch. Sock gets a penalty point for doing a Shapovolov , then amazing Jack Sock backhand drop shot volley at 1-1 third set v Zverev. Fascinating match - David Law described it as shot of his career.
I like Sock, can be a bit brattish but fascinating to watch. Great volleyer.
And Sock wins, 6-4 3rd set. Well done Showtime Sock. Semifinal now v Dimitrov.
Federer v Thiem or Goffin in the other.
this is proving to be a good event, some good matches. Well done Jack Sock. Lost 4 straight matches, then q's in Stockholm, 24th going into Paris, now up to 8th in the World in running!
