Week 40 - Challenger ($100,000) - Stockton, CA, USA (hard)

Although pleased for Cam. We should also spare a thought for Brydan- he is a Brit and a win would have helped his confidence. I suspect this was a big match for both of them and hence probably why it was a little tense at the end. Good luck to cam next round and hope Brydan can go further in his next event, presumably next week?

Unfortunately, other news not so good:

L16: (WC) Deiton Baughman & Alexios Halebian (USA/USA) CR 1294 (544+750) d (3) Luke Bambridge & David O'Hare (IRL) CR 276 (140+136) 7-6(7) 7-5

Hugely disappointing.  cry

Cam wins in three but seemed like a very bad tempered match. Only saw the last set but Klein was complaining about everything and I don't think he shook Cam's hand at the end because he viewed he over-celebrated. Don't think they'll be partnering up for doubles any time soon!

Commentator said Cam didn't play well but still won!

I must admit I find it hard to support Brydan very much when his behaviour always seems to precede him... Any close match and this seems to be fairly predictable.

Personally I don't support him at all.  To me he is no different to an Australian in that regard.

Why should we spare a though for BK? I read this and was glad to then see a few responses that matched my immediate reaction. At the most literal level, being a Brit is simply someone from somewhere with whatever views and behaviours coming over here and signining a piece of paper. And he did that for the same reason we got Konta, them being tossed out unwanted from the Aussie system.

I like Cam (and his Dad from his media comments) and so find it easy to support and accept him. I find Konta interesting and support her from that angle, even though I'm not naturally magnetically attracted to her personality. I don't like BK at all and don't support him.

Andy Murray had a torrid time because although he was fully British, plenty of British people didn't like his character. And Roger Federer gets massive support from people who aren't Swiss. BK is not owed our sympathies or support. It is for him to demonstrate he deserves it through the person he comes across as being.

My default position is to get behind Brits as I imagine it is for most people here, we want them in general to do well. If folk generally don't they will feel very out of place here. But then it comes down to the individual player, and such as their personality as much as I know it, their playing style and / or how much I have followed their careers developing as to how much I support them or very occasionally not really at all. Being from north of Hadrian's Wall is of course an additional plus. All in all I'm a bit "meh" re Brydan.

He should take that as a positive compared to how I used to regard Colin Montgomerie in golf, a Brit and a Scot.

I agree totally with Indiana - don't have a problem supporting any Brit but Brydan does himself no favours with his on-court antics

Two unheard of players of differing nationality facing off against each other, I will support the one with GBR next to their name.

But if i learn of something that turns me off them, then i don't support said player, GBR or not.

QF:  (8) Cameron Norrie WR 136 vs (2) Tennys Sandgren (USA) WR 97

A repeat of last week's final in Tiburon.  Let's hope for a similar outcome.

Cam was clowning in the first set, and wanted match time on court, as the next match is against Sandgren, whom he  owns, so no real match time until the semi.

I assume you have the same attitude towards Aljaz and Jo as well then?

I couldn't stand Montgomerie that's not a good comparison. So much to dislike.

Err that's rather why he's my example. I didn't randomly choose him as a Scot to not support. And plenty did still support him, though probably with varying degrees of enthusiasm.

Surely the whole point many folk are making is that they generally support Brits, including naturalized Brits ( though maybe often less so for such as having not followed them through their development ), but generally also take the individual attributes into account. Aljaz does not equal Jo does not equal Brydan.
