Week 40 - Challenger ($100,000) - Stockton, CA, USA (hard)

Thanks Yaz, mistakes are made and we all learn from them. Bit of a shame they wouldn't let him play though.

Look forward to seeing him play next week.

Hi all,
Just to clear things up.. Jay was gutted not to play singles yesterday. There was some confusion our end and he ended up withdrawing a day late from a futures in Italy.. because of ITF rules he was not allowed to compete.. it is discretionary but they would not allow him
to play. Onwards and upwards.. big learning curve for us all.

Thanks for clearing that up.  It must be frustration as hell when these nuances of the regulations crop up, but the rest of us will at least be breathing a big sigh of relief that it is not an injury.  As you say. We live and learn.  On to the next one.

Many thanks, Yasmin. It's always good to hear what the real reasons are (stops our well-intentioned, but often completely wrong, speculation ).

And, yep, these things happen - admin bloopers - we've all been there....

Great to hear that's all's well.

Yes, it is very unfortunate... but thank goodness nothing more serious.

Just came in to explain what appeared to have happened only to find Yaz got there hours ago with the full story

I did wonder what was going on when I saw the LWM in the ITA F32 list while compiling this week's T25 table but assumed he must have got some dispensation to play Challenger qualies then someone pointed out to me on Twitter this morning that ITF F32 L/W was given as the reason on the Stockton Q draw sheet.

Anyway, good that the Stockton 'withdrawal' wasn't due to injury and that everything is in order for Jay to be able to play qualies this coming weekend.

Absolutely horrid service game from Liam, 4 consecutive UEs and it is 2-1 to MK.

Very poor image quality, which is a shame. I think the problem is a cheap CCD pointing towards the sun.

Hmm, the stream I am watching on videoplus isn't too bad, apart from the sunlight.

Liam did OK to break back but then got broken again despite being 40-15 up.

Looks dreadfully windy. Both players playing pretty poorly.

(And, yes, stevemcqueen - you can't see the ball - it ain't great).

This is really not pretty. Loads of wind, loads of erros and it is very hard to see the ball.  Liam trails 4-2

Mike Cation did tweet about the windy conditions earlier. Making it very difficult for both players. But that hasn't stopped Liam from turning the set around. He saved 2 SPs in the breaker from 4-6* and went on to take it 9-7.

Not quite sure how, but Liam takes the tie breaker 9-7.  The poor quality of the stream means that I can't commnet too much.

I have given up trying to watch. I can't even here Mike's commentary very well. It does seem that the conditions have forced both players to play defensively and it is a real battle out there in every sense of the word. Liam has made a good start to the 2nd set though going 2-0* up.

Liam nor 3-0 up with two breaks. Judging by the reduced shakiness of the camera, I think the wind may have diminished.

The shots are far better quality in the Brydan match (and were in the first set too) so it's obviously not completely the wind.

It's almost as though Liam and Mitch were bringing out the worst in each other in that first set ...
