Thiem is the top seed.

Has Tomic been injured or dropped down due to poor results I thought he was top 30 at Wimbledon

He has dropped down the rankings as he is lazy. End of.  He managed to become a solid top 40 player based on talent, not work ethic, that is what separates top 5, top 10 and so on.  Tennis is 80% talent, 20% work ethic.

Have you ever followed someone like Julien Benneteau ?

Interesting. Quick courts may not be to Kyle's ideal liking but I imagine less so Tomic's as he lumbers kind of into position. I imagine as well as hitting good shots being rewarded there was a fair amount of being in no position to deal with good shots occurring and contributing to short rallies.

Bit disappointing of course, well more especially that first set, but young Donaldson is having a very good year, breaking into the top 100 and close to the top 50, indeed #50 ( higher than Kyle ) in the race. So on a court by the sounds of it quicker than Kyle would prefer the result itself is not a big shock.

Good to hear that he had fully recovered from his neck issue ( and hopefully that is all still fine ) and move on to hopefully better weeks to come in the closing months of the season.

First week back, a few events to come (he doesnt seem to be entered beyond Shanghai however, not sure why not - I would have thought Basle/Vienna and Stockholm or some such would have been worth it, given he isnt guaranteed for Paris either) so chance to build on his couple of matches this week

A bit disappointing Indy??? Yes a seeded player in an ATP gets bagelled in the 1st set against a challenger player. I'd hate to see what more than a bit would be. Think Kyle will be playing more tournaments beginning with the 1st 2 letters of this tourny pretty soon.

Surely the first set score doesn't matter if you then go on to win the second?

And given the two of them are only about 10 places different in ranking, and about 18 months apart in age, and the final score was very close, is it really so bad, Jag?

Cool, hadnt spotted that. I was lazy and using live rankings and they dont have him listed as playing those two weeks. Checking MTF just now, I can see he is indeed in Antwerp but just outside the current list for Vienna although that will no doubt change. Good that he is trying to play all the events for rest of season, should be able to play back into form.

Tournament report:

Twenty-year-old #NextGenATP contender Jared Donaldson, currently sixth in the Emirates ATP Race to Milan, served sixth seed Kyle Edmund of Great Britain a first set bagel and overcame a second set resurgence to prevail 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 in one hour and 38 minutes and book his second career Tour level quarterfinal appearance.

The young American squandered two match points in the final game of the third set but eventually got the break he needed on his third attempt to secure his second win over Edmund this year, having defeated him at the Miami Masters.

Even though the score wasnt that close in the first two sets, it was a tight match. The difference was in the first set I was the aggressor, forcing him to make mistakes, while I became more passive in the second. I served a little better in the third set and I think that translated into all aspects of my game. I had beaten him before so I knew that if I just played my game, I could do it again, said the world No. 58.
