I actually really doubt that being the only remaining Brit in the QFs of a 60K is going to bring any particular added pressure at all to Laura. It's hardly any big deal even with her own struggles. Indeed her own struggles and game are I'd say the real general pressures rather than being our sole survivor here. It's a neutral issue for me.
And playing and initially relatively struggling against a player with Whittle's non record was probably more of a pressure than playing Townsend.
Not saying she'll beat Townsend, though on one of her better days she clearly can, but losing to Whittle would have been rather awful.
Yes, I agree. The pressures on Laura will not be greater because Naomi's out of it - there won't be additional big crowds of ex-Naomi supporters. And the UK press hardly care about the event at all, no matter who's left.
The pressure is on her permanently, due to her hopes/expectations and her history. Overall. Her WTA ranking, not really her GB pecking order ranking.
I think, actually, that Laura loves the States, blends into the background better over there, and generally can perform better - she certainly is in the spotlight when she plays in Britain in a quite daft, and counterproductive, way.
She'll probably lose against Townsend, but that will be due to the tennis, not the pressure.
But, perfectly possible, of course, that Laura pulls one out of the bag - Taylor is hardly a hardened, ultra solid, experienced opponent.
I remember watching (on stream)Laura play Townsend in qualies a few years back. Townsend was extremely young and Laura did beat her. But it was close and I think one of the sets went to a tie break but Laura won that comprehensively, perhaps even to love. I could check how accurate my memory is later !! Anyway Townsend is a different beast now and will also remember the experience of Laura's lefty serve and have a much better game plan than she did then.
