Week 39 - Australia F5 ($25,000) - Brisbane (hard)

QR1: (q3) Rhett Purcell (GBR) WR 1112 v Tomislav Papac (AUS) UNR

Edited out the "+H". Brisbane not as hospitable as Alice Springs last week but then maybe doesn't need to be.

4 of the qualifiers will face the 4 of the top 5 seeds (1,2,3,5)

The other 4 get a decidedly easier start

Is James Frawley related to the ex Aussie Wimbledon semifinalist, Rod Frawley? Son perhaps?

I can't find anything to confirm or deny that.

Rhett is first up at 10 am on crt 8 (1am your time) so you should have a result when you wake up

Rod Fawley had a brother John who won the junior Wimby doubles with Pat Cash in 82. Both are Brisbane whereas James is ACT. Nothing definite.

Week 39 - Australia F5 ($25,000) - Brisbane (hard)

R1: (Q) Rhett Purcell WR 1106 beat James Frawley (AUS) WR 896 (CH 886 in June this year)  7-6(1) 6-2

R2: (Q) Rhett Purcell WR 1106 vs (7) Gao Xin (CHN) WR 570 (CH 434 in November 2016)

With Rhett's point from last week plus this week's point so far still to be added, he will move onto at least 10 points on Monday week and well past his current CH 1095 ( from July ).

Well done to Rhett. He's had very few wins against top 1000 players (just one???) so they're all very welcome.

His new CH will probably be rather short-lived though as he has his big counter (6 points) coming off in October. Be nice if he could just get one more win here and maybe just sneak into the top 1000 himself.

Seem to be one or two Japanese and Chinese in the draw this week, not all Australians. Possibly a stronger draw but good win for Rhett in round one.

Thanks for looking - just a thought!

I dont presume Rhett is related to Mel Purcell the US player from the 80's who  played Connors tough at one Wimbledon back then....IGMC! JK!

Maybe not quite so short-lived after all (though 6 points is still a very big chunk to lose) - Rhett opens the day with a career best ranking scalp!

L16: (Q) Rhett Purcell WR 1106 beat (7) Gao Xin (CHN) WR 570 (CH 434 in 2015) by 5 & 4

QF: (Q) Rhett Purcell WR 1106 v (4) Maverick Banes (AUS) WR 374 (CH 345 in 2014)

H2H 0-1, 1 & 6, Canberra earlier this year
