Barty easily dispatched Bellis, and so steps up as Johanna's first opponent.
Hopefully the result will be the same straight sets win for Jo as in their match at Nottingham this year.

I think this will be a close match with no foregone conclusion, especially as Jo's not playing her best right now.

Ash is only as low as WR 37 because she's just come back onto the circuit to take time out and figure whether she wanted to play tennis. She started the year at 325, and has played a limited schedule.

I look forward to this one.

Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys have both gone out in their first matches in straight sets. Shows the up and down nature in the womens game right now . Based on those results the only player who can catch Jo in the race this week that is left in is Svetlana Kuznetsova and she needs to win the whole event to pass Jo.

Madison had an MTO for her left wrist and was practically in tears - it's the same wrist that has caused her so much grief over the past couple of years.
Do hope it's OK but it didn't look good.

Super win for Anna & Nicole

Jo looks like not taking long; not for good reasons, 0-5 in just 24 minutes.
Serve has gone, almost completely.

Well the only good thing at the moment is everyone else behind #8 Jo in the race is losing ( and they were already a fair way back ).

Of the 7 from #9 to #15, 5 have lost their R1 matches ( Mladenovic, Stephens, Sevastova, Keys and Pavlyuchenkova ), 1 isn't playing ( Vandeweghe ) and the final one #10 Kuznetsova ( though possibly some people's biggest concern ) doesn't play her initial R2 match until tomorrow. #7 Ostapenko also doesn't play until tomorrow

#16 Garcia has won her R1 match but started over 1600 points behind Jo.

Jo may limp over the Singapore line, but it would be kinda useful to find some better form by then.

Of course Jo herself hasn't lost, and she yet might not.

Well I'm going to celebrate Anna and Nicole's win first, since that is an extremely encouraging win for them smilesmile. Good luck for their next match, since their partners do have a relatively formidable ranking between them.

R32: Anna SMITH/Nicole MELICHAR (GBR/USA) 105 (56 + 49) vs (5) Gabriela DABROWSKI/ Yifan XU (CAN/CHI) 38 (18+20)

Jo playing two awkward mix it up players in two weeks. Jo struggled far more against these sorts of players when she's on top form, so to have to play them when you are out of form and struggling for rythym is a bit of a nightmare!

I still see no need to panic. She just looks knackered and could do with the season end coming soon!
