RE: Davis Cup 2018 World Group R1 - Spain v Great Britain - 2-4 February

R1: Albert Ramos (ESP) WR 21 defeated Liam Broady WR 165 by 6-3 6-4 7-6(6)

Looks as though Liam had a bit of a go at least.

Bit of a go ? That was a really great performance considering the ranking difference. To get some breaks of serve against Ramos is impressive.

Wouldn't of begun to imagine Liam not at least giving it a bit of a go. And good that he seems to have performed so well all things considered re his lack of clay court experience and the standard of the opposition.

Cam will no doubt give it a go too. I'll be very pleasantly surprised though if it's as close.

That was a great watch that Ramos v Liam match, really enjoyed it. Ramos' pass at 6-5 was magnificent.

Great start from Cam.

Thank god John Lloyd isn't on commentary for this one...

Normally the format is Jamie Baker will do the first two sets of the second rubber, but John Lloyd will be back for set 3.

Jamie seems to talk sense and knows the game well tactically. Does anyone know if he has ever dabbled in coaching at all, it would strike me he would be a good coach at pro level.

Cam two sets down. Again, making a good effort and both he and Liam have played well. Kudos to Leon Smith and the team for getting the tactics right even if not able to grab a win

Alistair Bruce-Ball (BBC Radio 5 Live) has been speaking to Liam:

He said: "I won't lie, I was pretty nervous at first to come out and see the passion from the fans and from the team. It really takes your breath away, but once I settled down, I felt fantastic and it was a massive source of strength and confidence to know that I had those guys behind me out there.

"I'm pleased I did myself proud and I fought to the end but I'm absolutely gutted I didn't win. The thing to remember is that these guys are only human. I know they've got fantastic records on the clay but they are beatable."

Cam is actually ahead now in set 3, another excellent effort. Maybe I wrote him off too soon in my earlier post...

Cam takes the third set by 6-3!  smile

From the Beeb's live text commentary:

An absolutely cracking fightback from Norrie after going 3-0 down very early in the set. His skills at the net have been very impressive.

So *3-2 to Cam in the fourth set and MTO for Bautista Agut.
