Davis Cup 2018 World Group R1 - Spain v Great Britain - 2-4 February

Caught me out too - it was 0-4 when I turned it on. Ramos looking a bt bewildered as it has gone to the tie-break

Cam breaks in the second set, the first break after the 8 breaks of the first set.

6-7(4) *3-2

We won't have the Stirling Uni mob trip to Australia or indeed Bob in Aus but Germany at home will do. Maybe a little work to do yet though ...

John Lloyd literally has nothing positive to say about anything. Such a bitter man.

Sorry, needed to get that out of my system!

He is so irritating - I watch with the sound off most of the time

I dont blame you. I dont understand why he cant give Cam any credit, hardly. Its always cam is doing x well but Ramos is playing terribly ffs!

Agree about Lloyd, shame that Jamie had to leave the commentary. He is lovely.

That said, glad its ARV playing at the moment. I know we are generally a nation of being rubbish at languages but the butchering of RBA's name was really annoying (pouncing it AgUT with a hard T sound, no, no, no.)

BBC Guidelines for commentators

Part 4 - Research

Remember that you may be on air for several hours, so its important to thoroughly research the players you're watching, or you may end up with nothing to offer but repeated incredulity. Spend at least 30 seconds looking up their ATP rankings.

Tennis authorities, listen to Sue : "the points system in tennis is brilliant".

Indeed !

Meaning generally re say no add ( grrr ! ) or shorter sets, quite apart from Davis Cup discussions re best of 5 vs best of 3 ( again there seem to have been some great 5 set matches around the globe this weekend and I wish they wouldn't touch that ).

And perhaps remember which side you are on - don't try so hard to be neutral that you spend all your time praising the opposition !

Yes, yes, yes!  That said, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "hard T":  it's a Spanish surname, all the letters should be sounded & the stress is on the second syllable, so it's a-GOOT.  In any case, ARV's name is suffering far more:  his mother's family name (matronymic) is correctly spelt Viņolas (so the "n" pronounced as though there were a "y" after it) & if the commentators are going to insist on using it when it's not strictly necessary, the stress should be on the second syllable:  vee-NYO-las.  Most of the aggro could be avoided if they stuck to the patronymic (the father's family name), i.e. the first one, as Jamie B occasionally manages to do, so simply Ramos & Bautista.

For the record, Sue Barker's pronunciation is equally abysmal.  Her rendering of Nicolas Mahut's & Pierre-Hughes Herbert's names when she's doing the catch-up on results in other matches is positively toe-curling!  furious

Stircrazy (on my phone which doesn't handle long quotes v well) the hard T sound - on the ATP website for RBA's page he doesn't seem to say it that way? But the com's were just awful, saying Agut without lengthening it.

Down & out:

R4:  Albert Ramos (ESP) WR 21 defeated Cameron Norrie WR 114 by 7-6(4) 2-6 7-6(4) 6-2  cry

Spain beats GB by three rubbers to one.  hmm  Nevertheless, another GB tennis star was definitely born this weekend.

Yes, commentators and pundits, at least do some fundamental research on players and pronunciation ( these players didn't arrive on court unexpectedly ) and we might have a little more respect for you rather than various states of indignation ).

I've played the game so can talk about it is not good enough. You have a job to do and a service to provide ( for which you are presumably rather well paid ). Those who can't / won't should be shifted out for those who can.

One can wish ...

Pity. But superb from Cam, good effort by Liam and just the doubles disappointing.

So play-off later in the year ...
