Ok, Liam has now served up a bagel to a former top 10 player and the current world number 31 in successive matches. I am totally flabbergasted, my flab has never been so gasted as Frankie Howerd used to say.
I didn't want to jinx Liam before the match by saying this, but I feel that Liam has a good record against left handers and I thought he had a chance today given his recent form. Having said that, his form against right handers hasn't been too shabby recently either.
Liam. What a top effort. So happy for you. I know how much hard work you put in and it is fantastic to see it paying dividends.
I couldn't watch it but am curious for those who did whether the Liam playing well against lefties is relevant the other way round too - i.e. Mannarino has always been a pesky player to play, using the angles in a very lefty way to cause trouble. Did that not work against Liam, given that he's lefty too?
With that and other results hitting the rankings next week, our top ten average stands to rise circa 15 places to mid 180's. I'd need to check but it could place us near the top ten countries overall. Strangely Dan seems possibly going to rise back a few places this week.
Phil's been quiet of late but he must be very pleased. Really kept the faith with Liam.
Mega pleased !!!! Always been a big believer in Liam's raw talent as you know, thought he'd be top 100 by now, but last June when I spoke to him I think for the 1st time I detected that he had lost a bit of fire for the game, he wasn't sure about the financial side of things, coaching setup etc., etc., Then this year in June I didn't even bring up tennis, just discussed footy and politics amongst other things, so to see him turnaround his career and be playing at this level, is just beyond all expectations. Alot of credit must go to Dave Sammel and to Liam himself for instilling the fire back into him, clearly whatever they're doing is working big time. Let's just hope the upward trend continues and he can finally fulfill that huge talent, because when in this form he does have the weapons to take his ranking into the top 100 and beyond.
A very good point, Phil, about Sammel and the importance of a coach who is a good fit. (I never did get round to starting a separate coaches thread but they can be so key to the whole business - just look at the transformation in JoKo).
I also thinks it shows the importance of rolling the dice sometimes and not trying to go for the easy points - as said before, most of the regrets of retired 'middling' players is that they didn't give it a go and see how they measured up to the top ones, just to see, because you never know...
Calling Mannarino the huge favourite, and Liam an opponent that never normally crosses Mannarino's path, and whom he's beaten in two easy sets the last time they played, saying that it started well and then Adrian suffered an 'abysmal' collapse....
