Amazing result! Yes, Gulbis was poor, but Liam stuck at it, and kept asking the questions and let Gulbis make the mistakes. This turns a promising week into a great one. 32 points, load of cash, and a real breakthrough, first time he's qualified for a ATP250 and now a 2nd round slot. And playing like this, who knows.

Liam has to defend 25 atp pts to the end of the year.
Already qualifying gets him 12 and if he manages to beat Gulbis a cool 20 more which more than covers the 25 so could easily push on for the rest of the year and break into the top 200

That's that box ticked.

Stunning result - Gulbis can be moody but still. Puts Liam into the top 200....in the Race

Getting carried away now but looking ahead it is Mannarino in the next round and he is known for producing pretty inconsistent play depending on his moods, how far can Liam go?

Mannarino's only lost twice this year though to players outside the top 100, and one of those was Shapovalov. So it's going to be tough. But a really good string of results from Liam. Really pleased for him. It seems strange that he had such a slump last year. Let's hope this run of results continues.

Brilliant from Liam. That's a great week. Banking the money as well should take the pressure off going into the last few months of the year. Hopefully he can finish the year inside the top 200.

Liam's second round match is fifth on the streamed court tomorrow, so probably early evening (Dom's doubles is last on the other court). Mannarino won their previous encounter 0 & 4 in the Knoxville Challenger of November 2014

L32: (Q) Liam Broady WR 248 beat (Q) Ernest Gulbis (LAT) WR 212 (CH 10 June 2014) 6-3 6-0

L16: (Q) Liam Broady WR 248 v (4) Adrian Mannarino (FRA) WR 31 (CH 27 in July 2015)

I'm not sure why, but if you check Liam's record, he gets the majority of his points in the latter half of the season.

Brave decision to turn up here( he could have played US challengers) and it has paid off(literally).

No doubt Oli's defeat by Lloyd on Sunday was a great weight off Liam's mind since he had promised on Twitter to buy him a pint if he won the tournament as a qualifier. Clearly made all the difference wink
