Week 38 - ATP 250 - St. Petersburg, Russia (indoor hard )

Well that was close. Another competitive match at this level that he could easily have won. Great week, and nothing but optimism from this for the rest of this year and beyond.

Baseline and service game impressive but the mistakes at the net game and the variation let him down. Much improved this lad. Onwards and upwards, cut those mistakes at the net, he'd have won this..

Didn't see today's match, but net play always struck me as being one of his strengths. His volleying skills were honed in his doubles days with Luke B.

Liam put up more of a fight against Dzumhur yesterday than Struff did today at least. I just really hope he can build on the momentum he has at the moment and continue to rise up the rankings. This week was a gamble that paid off very, very well. And even then, it could very well have been even better.

Great (I think!) to reflect that 9 months ago Liam was playing the British Tour event in Loughborough.
It's a Premier event (and Ed Corrie was in the final too), so a good level.
But nice to see that the British Tour events serve as a helpful tool for our top players, when needed, as well as a springboard for the up-and-coming.

So Liam lost to the eventual winner of the tournament. It was also a 3 set match but I think Liam got a stack more games than Fognini did, which is quite something !!!
