I wonder whether her physical difficulties mean she struggles to maintain form throughout the week. Anecdotally it feels like she often starts tournaments better than she finishes them.
It's not injuries, Michael. It's birth malformations of her hands and feet, and palate. (Although they have caused injuries, as well as needing correcting - insofar as possible - in themselves).
Yes, a wonderful win for Fran.
Always great to see a young player turn it around so quickly. Wonder if she came in with a different plan, having played Emily last week? Or just executed better? Or if Emily played worse?
Oh, thanks for the correcting CD - and I'm even more impressed then, and full credit to Fran for what she's managed to achieve thus far, therefore. May she continue. She seems to be a fast learner too, and yes, it would be interesting to know what was different about today's match!

Well, Fran maintained a pretty good standard throughout last week, and only lost narrowly to Emily in three sets in the final. Let's see if she can keep it up this week, but thus far she's shown good stamina the last 10 days or so...
Yes, but her best performance (in scoreline anyway) was toppling the top seed in the first round. And she's done much better against Emily Arb in the early round rather than the final. It's only a hunch though.
Emily's doubles results have been surprisingly variable of late maybe putting it kindly for someone with a good reputation in that dicipline, a CH 352 and been playing regular college doubles.
Now given the choice it's singles wins every time. Just been a bit surprised.
Though I guess here she was already not having a great day.
Second set less impressive, Fran now *4-5 down, needs to break to stay in the set. Main difference with first set is that her % points won on first serve has dropped - 83.3 to 58.3% and her number of DFs has increased dramatically from 2 to 9.
Well huge credit to Fran there, quite amazing really against the #3 seed. Not only did she get the break back when she needed in the final game of the set, but she then saved the first two set points, both against her, one on her serve, one on her opponents, then won the set and match on her first match point... 6-3 7-6(7) Seriously good, and into the SFs...
Interesting that the SF seems to be a match up of the precocious teenagers seeing that her 17 year old qualifier opponent has just taken out the #5 seed, and in her first round match the #2 seed.
