Week 37 - ITF ($25K) - Redding, USA Hard

What a shame.
Simmonds must be loving it! W/O last round, five games this, and in to the final!

Must be some real doubt about Katie moving on to Texas next week then, I guess.
Her 3rd retirement of the year; could suggest something lingering. Could equally be unrelated, but best be cautious. Given how close the end of the regular season is, perhaps there is the temptation to play a few more times before a long rest in the off-season to work things out; especially as Katie still has close to half her points to defend.

And, a damp squib ending to the GB week, with both Ms. Jones, and Swan, having to retire from their respective SF

very well played Katie, Daneika and Harriet it is a rare week where so many British players walk away from the same tournament having done so well.

Daneika while at college peaked at top 9 nationally in doubles, 31 in singles and played all 4 years at no 1 for Florida State!, a team captain for 3 out of 4, that is some college career at a college that takes athletics very seriously and plays in a top conference, so good quality opposition week in week out which would also include out of conference SEC match ups.

From a coaching perspective she has really moved on from relatively low profile Ivy League where the majority of athletes are genuine STUDENT/athletes back to ACC with Wake Forest where it is much much more student/ATHLETE. Not to belittle Columbia as there is a fascinating link in that Jeff Wysher is a Columbia post grad, he went some where decent first and is someone fascinated by coaching sport initially across a number of sports as a teacher and then growing a programme at Akron in the MAC before spending the last 7 years rebuilding Wake Forest with year on year top 25 recruiting classes, gradually developing a winning record in the ACC and now a presence in the NCAA team tournament.

Obviously extremely exciting for Daneika in that she has moved to a programme that has such dynamic leadership and one in which she should be a perfect fit in to help grow into a national power. Me feels she may well be doing some (lots of) hitting and plenty of doubles coaching!

I don't see this as a lucky little run having fallen on her feet with a decent partner but a product of what has been a very focused path into evolving from one of the best British female college players of the last decade (definitely her generation) into the best player/coach she can be. It is great to see someone being so proactive in developing her career in this way. Plenty to learn next year and congratulations to her on putting herself in a position to learn it

You may have some point about Dani in the doubles, and I certainly didn't mean to make the poor girl sound like chopped liver !

But, in singles, she played tons and tons of ITFs and barely made it out of qualifying most of the time (or lost very early when having been given a wildcard into a British main draw). I know she was quite young, and things may be very different now, but she those she was playing were young too.

But I think the coaching path seems an excellent career path for many of our student athletes - and several are doing coaching/playing successfully, which makes sense on a lot of levels. If it's working for her, that's great.

Daneika reached a career high of 820 in the singles when she was 19 and a career high of 540 in the doubles when she was 18.

Huge apologies to Daneika !

They're making a cracking go of the final - practically got it wrapped up.

SORRY

A Cinderella story! Daneika claims a first ever pro title, effectively from out of absolutely nowhere.
6-3 6-4

If you'd have asked me at the start of the year to name all Brit's likely to win a title of any description, at any level, I still wouldn't have considered Daneika. Very well done to her.
Commiserations to Harriet.

Well, well

FINAL :

Daneika Borthwick & Ana Veselinovic (MNE) UNR (UNR & 279) beat (3) Harriet Dart & Maria Sanchez (USA) CR 550 (428+122)  6-3 6-4

Sorry for Harriet and Maria, but that is some story of a week and ultimately the title.

Jaggy, thanks for the contribution but don't worry you've not missed anything and the thread would just frustrate you.

I would conserve your energies and stay clear of threads without ATP in front of them as elsewhere there may be some doubles lurking! Even worse later in the week a doubles win!!

It will be interesting to see where and with who Daneika pops up next, I would imagine we will see a bit of her during the holidays in the south east, as a voluntary assistant coach I presume the rationale would be to continue to play and there is a bit more going on year round in the SE.

Wake Forrest are interesting in that they only have one international player and yet are doing OK continuing to build a reputation in a very competitive conference. We may see her partnering this years only freshman a federation cup player from Cyprus who has JCH of 140 but likely suppressed as she appears to have just played local grade 4/3s and won them since 2015.

Must hope nothing too serious

Poor Katie; she seems destined to take one step forward then back again through injury :(

Here's hoping she can get an injury free run in 2018...
