Katie twice went a break down, at one point with her opponent serving for the match, but she broke back and took the first set 7-6(3)

And lovely to see two doubles wins too, both Danielka and Harriet through to different SF, Danielka with Katie's next singles opponent and Harriet with Maria Sanchez.

Katie faced a SP in that 5-6* game in the first set, escaped, won the TB and still had two more competitive sets against the unranked, never ranked ( although looks like this tournament is now a third counter so a ranking coming ) 22 year old American. Looks as if the good news from the match can be summed up in two words. She won.

It's not great. Hope having got through she can step it up, she will no doubt have to.

Katie's opponent, Lauren Marker, may never have been ranked but graduated this summer after 4 years at Arizona, a PAC12 (strong conference) school so probably a bit of a ringer.

Arizona have a weak tennis programme compared to the rest of the PAC 12 and generally prop up the conference but to be fair Marker is one of their best female players.... ever and even at No 1 has managed some decent wins squeezing into last years college top 30 as a senior. Again the bizarre nature of college rankings being that the whole Florida and Stanford rosters would give her a decent game.

To put things in perspective Katie (who would be a freshman at college) shouldn't have too much of a problem even on a bad day with any college players outside the top 2 or 3, who she probably knows pretty well already

Thanks The O and to Oakland for the additional info. So some extenuating circumstances but looks likely Katie still some way off where she'd like to be. But it's been like that. Probably battle on as best she can for the rest of the year and have a big regroup in the off season.

Those college ringers can be a bit annoying except when they're our college ringers
