This is Tara's best performance for months, by the looks of it - still a lot to do to win it, but 5-7 7-5 *1-1 now

Sorry Steven I know you like to see the positive in most things which is admirable but 12 Double faults in 6 service games can't really be described with the word best. 17 in total as well, it's horrible form frankly.

That's as may be, but it is still, probably Tara's best performance for months.

Yes, my original comment was supposed to be double-edged - more encouraging than most recent matches (despite the ridiculously high number of dfs) but that's also a comment on quite how dire many of those recent matches have been.

Naomi takes the first set with a super backhand winner. 6-4

Both players facing bps in just one service game. Naomi saved her one bp faced with an ace. Destanee saved 4 bps before Naomi took advantage of a 2nd serve. 3 Broady aggressive backhand returns that won her the point in that game.

Naomi has 4 bps at start of 2nd set but can't convert despite 2 being 2nd serves. Missed opportunity.

2 dfs as Naomi gives away her serve to 15 after four 2nd serves

Destanee saves 3 bps with good serving *1-4

Destanee takes the second set 3-6 having won all 8 bps, with plenty of help from Naomi

Serve dominant early in the 3rd set 2-1*

Destanee untidy for 15-40 then inspired to take the next four points, including 2 aces and an astonishing b winner off an aggressive Broady return  2-2

Plenty of good play from Naomi in a long game. DA saves one bp but eventually a df costs her the break *4-2

Naomi poor for 0-30 then big serves and a DA b ue give her the next four points 5-2*

Naomi serving for the match:

ace 15-0. Fails to attack then pays the price 15-15 unret 30-15 DA attacks 30-30 NB b dtl 40-30 df 40-40 DA crushes a 2nd serve 40-A another 2nd serve, this time Naomi with a stunning b dtl winner 40-40 unret 2nd A- A f w 40-40 big 1st serve then smash winner A- DA loses the contest with an awful forehand into the net on what should have been a comfortable winner 6-3

----

Naomi played some good tennis, especially when recovering from being 0-30 down on her serve several times, but on the big points Destanee was far superior (most of them were on her serve). Naomi started the match punishing DA's 2nd serve but could barely land a 2nd serve return for the rest of the contest. In the end, it was errors from Destanee that got Naomi over the finishing line.

And great to see Naomi get over the line from there without further problem, 6-4 in the third. A handy 30 points for her too after that relieving first round win...

Don't see it commented on anywhere else but Naomi has joined the million dollar prize money table for our women in career earnings with her US Open prize money.

Yes, I noted that myself when I looked at the match bio page on the online app... That's a somewhat better financial situation she's in now than a few years ago, even if her recent results have generally been disappointing.

Hopeful sign is that after going 4-0 double break down she has now held serve for 3 straight games and is 1-0 up in the second. Hopefully finding her range and can do some damage on the return this set to make this a match.

Had her first BP at 30-40 in her first return game of the second set but Babos dug it out, definitely looking up though.
