Week 37 - ITF ($25K) - Batumi, Georgia, Hard

Q1: Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) (q7) 583 vs BYE

I've been to Batumi once before. I love Georgia as a country, and Batumi is a very pleasant 'resort' town on the Black Sea... Lots of fresh agricultural produce from that region, with some very different types of wines... And they love barbeque there...

Amazing that Emily can still manage to find another country to add to her long list of those in which she has played. There's surely not many left now!
Her last 3 outings have all ended in QR2. With the Bye here, she'll only need the one win to break that unwanted little streak.

And she really should negotiate this Q2 match... Her opponent was actually one set down in her Q1 match, when the q11 seed retired.

Q2: Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) (q7) 583 vs Lana KENTCHIASHVILI (GEO) UNR 17 yrs (JCH:535 July 17)

Whilst the singles draw is not yet out, in the doubles Em is second seed with Ksenia Lykina (RUS), with whom she has played before.

L32: Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) (Q) 583 vs Ekaterina KAZIONOVA (RUS) (Q) 459=CH 18 yrs

As good as first round draw as Emily could expect to get though she is still the lower ranked player.

The Russian seemes to have served poorly in set 1, and well in the other two sets, which might have been the difference.
6-1 5-7 3-6

Yes pity. Em still won the most points overall, such was he difference in that first set, but it seems her being broken at 5-5 in the second set was the crucial turning point in the match.

Hmmm...

Emily W-S and Lykina were second seeds in the doubles but lost their R1 match, 8-10 in the MTB
